Paanakam: India’s Favourite Traditional Drink, often found at Temples of South India

If you have ever visited Lakshmi-Narasimha temple as a child or even know ‘Paanakam’ will not be a new term to you. Paanakam is a Sanskrit word that means “drink that provides energy and refreshment”.

This refreshing and traditional South Indian drink that is often served during festivals and religious occasions. It is a delicious blend of spices and jaggery, and it has a unique and satisfying taste that is loved by many. The primary ingredient is jaggery, a traditional sweetener made from sugarcane juice or palm sap. Jaggery is a healthier alternative to refined sugar, as it is less processed and contains more nutrients.

Here’s a simple recipe for paanakam:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup jaggery
  • 4 cups water
  • 1 teaspoon powdered dry ginger
  • 1 teaspoon powdered cardamom
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • A few fresh mint leaves (optional)
  • A few lemon slices (optional)

Instructions:

  1. In a large saucepan, combine the jaggery and water.
  2. Heat the mixture over medium heat, stirring constantly until the jaggery dissolves completely.
  3. Add the dry ginger, cardamom, and black pepper to the mixture.
  4. Stir well and let the mixture simmer for 5-7 minutes, until the spices are well infused.
  5. Remove the saucepan from heat and let it cool.
  6. Once the mixture has cooled down, strain it using a fine mesh sieve to remove any impurities.
  7. Chill the paanakam in the refrigerator for at least an hour.
  8. Before serving, garnish with fresh mint leaves and lemon slices (if desired).
