Bottled water company Bisleri International has signed a manufacturing and bottling partnership with Dubai-based Nasser Abdulla Lootah group, marking its first international expansion. 

The Nasser Abdulla group, a 25-year-old entity, has businesses in travel, shipping, logistics, mineral water, real estate and IT. Emirates Drinking Water will carry out operations for Bisleri water at its plants in Dubai, which will sell in Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi in mass-premium general and modern trade stores, hotels and restaurants, and via ecommerce platforms.

Bisleri International is a leading bottled water company in India, which was founded in Mumbai in 1965. The company’s name is derived from the Italian word “Bisleri”, which is the surname of the founder, Felice Bisleri. The company is known for its flagship product, Bisleri mineral water, which has become a household name in India. Over the years, Bisleri has diversified its product portfolio to include various types of water, carbonated drinks, and fruit juices.

Bisleri has a vast distribution network in India, which includes over 150 manufacturing plants, a network of more than 6,000 distributors, and a fleet of 7,500 trucks. The company’s products are available in various sizes, ranging from small bottles of 250 ml to large 20-litre bulk packs. In 2021, Tata Consumer Products announced that it would acquire a majority stake in Bisleri International for an estimated INR 6,000-7,000 crore, in what is expected to be one of the largest deals in India’s FMCG sector. While there are several carbon accounting startups that provide similar services, Carbon Maps stands out by focusing exclusively on the food industry. Rather than calculating a company’s carbon emissions as a whole, the platform evaluates the environmental impact of individual products.

Patrick  Asdaghi, Cofounder, said, “I wanted to make an impact, so I started moving up the supply chain and looking at agriculture.” and added “We don’t want to create the ratings. We want to create the tools that help with calculations — a sort of SAP,” and concluded with “You can’t have a true climate strategy if you don’t have some collaboration across the chain,”

The co-founders of Carbon Maps, Patrick Asdaghi, Jérémie Wainstain, and Estelle Huynh, have already had success in the food industry. Asdaghi’s previous startup, FoodChéri, which specializes in healthy food delivery, was acquired by Sodexo a few years ago. Breega and Samaipata, two venture capital firms that previously invested in FoodChéri, have also invested in Carbon Maps.

While few brands currently display eco scores on their labels, Carbon Maps believes that this is likely to change as consumers become more aware of environmental issues and demand more sustainable products. The European Union is also working on a standard called the Product Environmental Footprint (PEF), which will allow countries to create their own scoring systems based on European criteria. Carbon Maps hopes to be well-positioned to benefit from these changes.

Currently, Carbon Maps is working with two companies on pilot programs to test its platform. The startup aims to cover every vertical in the food industry and uses data from standardized sources like GHG Protocol, IPCC, ISO 14040, and 14044 to create models that calculate the impact of each criterion. By targeting food brands, Carbon Maps hopes to eventually get everyone across the supply chain to use its platform, making it an essential tool for sustainable food production.

For the Batter:

  • 1/2 cup chickpea flour
  • 1/2 tsp red chilli powder

  • Water as required

For Frying:

  • Oil as required

Instructions:

  1. Cut the paneer into thin slices and set aside.
  2. To make the filling, mix together the crumbled paneer, cashew nuts, raisins, garam masala powder, red chilli powder, and salt in a bowl.
  3. Spread a little bit of the filling on each slice of paneer and then sandwich it with another piece of paneer to create a paneer sandwich. Set aside.
  4. To make the batter, mix together the chickpea flour, red chilli powder, salt and water to form a smooth batter.
  5. Dip each paneer sandwich in the batter and shallow fry in hot oil until golden brown. Drain on a paper towel and set aside.
  6. Heat oil in a pan and add cumin seeds. Once they start to sizzle, add finely chopped onions and sauté until they turn golden brown.
  7. Add ginger and garlic paste and cook for another 2-3 minutes.
