Zomato launches Meal Service ā€˜Zomato Everyday’ starting INR 89 per meal

Zomato, a well-known Indian food aggregator unicorn, has recently launched a revamped home-cooked meal service called ‘Zomato Everyday.’ The new service, previously known as ‘Zomato Instant,’ is presently available in select areas of Gurugram, starting at a price of INR 89. The move to remodel its 10-minute food delivery service came after low daily order volume, inability to scale the segment, and pay fixed costs.

By launching Zomato Everyday, the company aims to attract a new set of consumers, particularly working professionals who live away from their homes and look for affordable home-cooked meals. Users can customize their meals by browsing the menu and ordering through the Zomato mobile app.

Deepinder Goyal, cofounder of Zomato  said “Our food partners collaborate with the home-chefs, who design each recipe with love and care to serve you home-styled, wholesome food at the best prices within minutes,ā€ 

The food aggregator giant reported consolidated losses of INR 346.6 Cr in Q3 FY23, a 38% increase from INR 250.8 Cr in Q2 FY23. However, its revenue rose from INR 1,661.3 Cr in Q2 FY23 to INR 1,948.2 Cr in Q3 FY23. Zomato’s customer loyalty program, Zomato Gold, had also reportedly scaled up since its launch in January, with over 9 Lakh members.

Apart from Zomato Everyday and Zomato Gold, the company has also launched ‘The Shelter Project,’ which provides rest points for its delivery executives to take a break between deliveries. Additionally, its quick commerce business, Blinkit, has introduced brand stores for direct-to-consumer (D2C) startups and FMCG brands on its mobile app, where registered D2C and FMCG brands can showcase their products on personalized brand pages.

Zomato seems to be expanding its services to cater to a broader range of consumers and strengthen its position as a leading foodtech aggregator in India.

Schultz further said, “Now, there’s going to be people who say, “Olive oil in coffee? But the proof is in the cup. In over 40 years, I can’t remember a moment in time where I’ve been more excited, more enthused that demonstrates the pride, the quality, the passion, the heritage and the craft of what Starbucks can do.”

The idea behind this unique flavor combination came from outgoing CEO Howard Schultz, who was inspired by the Mediterranean tradition of consuming a spoonful of olive oil each day.  The cities which the company is eyeing are, besides Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru and Indore.Out of the six new brands, the company has already finalised three brands to be launched in the next one year. ā€œWe are in the process of finalising remaining concepts and brands as well,ā€

And concluded with ā€œfocusing heavilyā€ on hospitality investments in the new financial year 2023-24. ā€œWe are planning an investment ranging between INR 22 to 25 crore in the hospitality sector this year.ā€

The study found that consuming 43 g (1.5 ounces) of raw almonds daily for 12 weeks can reduce insulin resistance, improve pancreatic function, and help control blood glucose levels. These findings are important because insulin resistance is a key factor in the development of type 2 diabetes, and controlling blood glucose levels is critical in managing the disease.

Moreover, the almond treatment group in the study achieved significant reductions in body weight, BMI, and waist circumference over the intervention period, suggesting that adding almonds to one’s diet can help with weight management. Additionally, participants in the almond intervention group had better levels of total cholesterol and triglycerides, which are important markers for managing obesity and diabetes.

Dr Mohan, said ā€œOur almond consumers had improvements to both body weight and blood sugar,ā€ and added ā€œObesity is a health problem seen around the world, and we know obesity raises the risk of chronic diseases, like type 2 diabetes. We also know this is a complex problem, tightly interwoven with diabetes, and we think we’ve identified a rather simple solution. It turns out, asking people to enjoy almonds instead of other snacks can help them manage weight and reduce the burden of diabetes.ā€

Gayathri Rajagopal, PhD scholar, University of Madras, first author on the study’s paper said . ā€œOur almond eaters demonstrated enhanced function of their beta cells, which are the cells in the pancreas that make insulin. This is substantial for people with prediabetes and suggests the potential for regular almond consumption to delay onset of diabetes. Besides that, we know almonds increase satiety making them a healthy snack for people predisposed to type 2 diabetes.ā€

Furthermore, the study found that consuming almonds led to better glycemic responses, which is important for managing blood glucose levels. The almond intervention group also consumed fewer carbohydrates and increased their intake of protein, monounsaturated fat, and dietary fiber. These changes in dietary intake could contribute to the improvements in health observed in the study.

The study employed a randomized controlled design, which adds to its credibility. However, it is important to note that the findings may only generalize to Asian Indian adults with overweight and obesity.
