Swiggy, one of India’s largest online food delivery platforms, has recently launched a new initiative called Swiggy Launchpad. The aim of this initiative is to encourage new restaurants to join the platform by offering them a commission-free first month. This move is part of Swiggy’s efforts to boost its restaurant partner base and expand its reach across the country.

Swiggy Launchpad offers several benefits to new restaurant partners. In addition to the commission waiver, they can get a dedicated growth manager to help them understand the platform and grow their business, free ads on the app to promote their brand, an extended delivery radius to reach more customers, apps to manage their business performance and create high-quality menus, as well as data and insights through business intelligence dashboards. Swiggy estimates that new restaurant partners can save up to INR 20,000 through commissions and other benefits.

In an official statement, Swiggy said,“Over the years, online food delivery has emerged as a credible channel for new restaurants to accelerate consumer traction and growth. Yet, many brands are unclear about where and how to begin. The 0% commission will work as a great tester for these new restaurants, while also saving them some capital.”

Swiggy has been facing challenges in recent times. In January 2022, the company sold its cloud kitchens firm Swiggy Access and laid off around 380 staff in an effort to rationalize costs. Swiggy’s CEO Sriharsha Majety had previously stated in an email to employees that the growth rate for food delivery had slowed down versus the company’s projections, and it needed to revisit its overall indirect costs.

Swiggy’s financial performance has been mixed. According to data from Tofler, Swiggy reported a net loss of INR 3,628.9 crore for FY22, which was higher than its net loss of INR 3,342.3 crore in the previous year. However, its revenue from operations increased by 125 percent to INR  5,704.9 crore in FY22, which was a significant improvement from the previous year.

Swiggy is one of the leading players in India’s online food delivery market, which has seen rapid growth in recent years. The Covid-19 pandemic has further accelerated the adoption of online food delivery platforms, as people increasingly turned to home delivery services to avoid going out. With its latest initiative, Swiggy hopes to attract more restaurant partners and expand its reach across the country.

Tilaknagar Industries expands reach in beverage industry with 10% stake in Samsara Gin Maker

Tilaknagar Industries Limited (TI) has announced that it will acquire a 10% stake in Spaceman Spirits Lab (SSLPL) for INR 9.75 crore. The investment will be made in two tranches through a combination of equity shares and compulsory convertible preference shares. SSLPL, which owns Samsara gin and was established in 2020, had an annual turnover of INR 2.7 crore during FY22.

TI’s investment in SSLPL will enable the company to enter the premium craft gin market segment. According to a BSE filing, the acquisition is expected to be completed on or before 30 June 2023.

With this investment, TI now has a presence in the growing segment of local craft gin brands in India. The success of local craft gin brands has caught the attention of the big players, including United Spirits, which acquired a minority stake in Nao Spirits in March last year and has significant expansion plans, both domestically and in international markets.

According to data from global alcohol market analysts IWSR, in India, small handmade batches of local gin account for nearly half of the mass-premium gin segment, which had sales of about 168,000 cases (of nine liters each) in 2021, up from 80,400 cases in 2019.

On the other hand, the demand for Indian-made foreign liquor (IMFL) gin brands in the value segment has shrunk in recent years as consumers traded up for pricier brands. In 2021, the value segment of gin fell to about 413,000 cases, down from 895,000 cases in 2019.

Tilaknagar Industries Limited (TI) is among India’s top ten largest distillers, founded in 1933 as Maharashtra Sugar Mills. TI sells Mansion House Brandy, which outsold Diageo’s McDowell’s No 1 to become India’s biggest brandy brand by volume in 2021, with sales of over 5.5 million cases during the first nine months of FY23.

TI’s investment in SSLPL demonstrates the company’s willingness to expand its portfolio and enter the growing segment of local craft gin brands in India. With the success of local craft gin brands, the acquisition is likely to provide TI with the opportunity to leverage the growing popularity of Samsara gin and further diversify its product range.

Swiggy Co-founder Phani Kishan to head Instamart as Karthik Gurumurthy steps down

Swiggy (Representative Image)

Phani Kishan Addepalli, one of the Co-founders of Swiggy, has taken over the role of heading the company’s Instamart quick commerce business. This comes after Karthik Gurumurthy, who was previously in charge of Instamart, stepped aside to take a sabbatical.

Addepalli has been with Swiggy for six years and was promoted to the role of Co-founder in July 2021. He has also been heading the company’s InsanelyGood business since October 2021.

Swiggy’s Instamart competes with other quick commerce players such as Zomato’s Blinkit and Zepto. According to a LinkedIn post by Gurumurthy on March 31, Instamart was almost a billion-dollar business.

Phani Kishan Addepalli, Co-founder, wrote, “Today business continues to grow, great relationship with our brand partners and with few of our stores already being profitable, it just feels how the seed germinated into a sampling and is now a big strong tree. Lot of compromises on physical & mental well being”.

He added, “I plan to take a sabbatical now to come back afresh and build something (0-1), something which I have loved… Live back and play back that memories of 2020 and 2021.”

“I take this break to rejuvenate myself through this sabbatical (and not because of the 13 Mn$ gap :D).. we value our people a lot and want to build a sports team with a heart.”

Swiggy has been looking to cut down costs recently, as it laid off 380 people two months ago. The move to have Addepalli take over as head of Instamart could be part of this effort to streamline operations.

Despite the cost-cutting measures, the quick commerce segment has been growing rapidly. A November 2022 report by Prosus stated that quick commerce had grown 20 times in the first half of 2022, with GMV reaching $257 million for that period. However, Swiggy’s losses for FY22 have widened to INR 3,628.9 crore, according to data from Tofler.

Swiggy’s decision to have Addepalli take over as head of Instamart comes at a time when the company is looking to reduce costs. While the quick commerce segment has been growing rapidly, Swiggy’s losses have also been widening. It remains to be seen how the company will navigate these challenges going forward.

Nestle SA is a Swiss multinational food and drink company that is the largest in the world, measured by revenue. It has operations in over 190 countries and employs approximately 308,000 people. The company’s portfolio includes well-known brands such as Nescafe, KitKat, Gerber, and Purina, among others.

In recent years, Nestle has been focused on expanding its presence in emerging markets, particularly in Asia, to tap into the growing middle class and increasing consumer spending in those regions.

India is one of the fastest-growing economies globally, with a large and young population that is becoming more affluent and health-conscious. The country’s food and beverage market is projected to grow rapidly, driven by factors such as rising urbanization, changing dietary habits, and increasing demand for convenience foods. Nestle has been operating in India for over 60 years and has a significant presence in the country, with a wide range of products that cater to different consumer segments.

Capital Foods Pvt is a privately held Indian company that specializes in the production of ready-to-cook and ready-to-eat food products. The company’s products are popular in India and other countries, particularly among consumers who enjoy spicy and flavorful food.

Capital Foods’ Ching’s Secret brand of noodles and fusion chutneys, in particular, has gained a cult following among young consumers in India. The company has also been expanding its presence in the global market, with products available in over 40 countries.

The potential acquisition of Capital Foods by Nestle would be a significant development in the Indian food and beverage industry. It would enable Nestle to further expand its product portfolio and reach in India, particularly in the ready-to-cook and ready-to-eat food segments. It would also provide Capital Foods with access to Nestle’s vast resources and expertise, which could help the company accelerate its growth and expansion plans.

The deal is not yet finalized, and several other potential buyers have expressed interest in acquiring Capital Foods. However, if Nestle does succeed in acquiring the company, it would be a major strategic move that could have far-reaching implications for the Indian food and beverage market. Investors and analysts will be closely monitoring developments in this space in the coming months.
