Hyderabad set to host Food Conclave 2023 from April 28th

The Telangana Government has announced that it will be hosting “The Food Conclave-2023” from April 28 to 29. The upcoming event aims to convene the foremost 100 thought leaders from the agri-food industry for intense discussions to identify crucial challenges and opportunities for the growth of the Indian agri-food sector over the next decade.

On Tuesday, Telangana minister KT Rama Rao (KTR) announced the unveiling of “The Food Conclave,” stating that ā€œOver the past 8 years, Telangana has been one of the leading states in development not just in IT, services and life sciences sectors but also in the agri-food sector. The state’s agriculture production has grown tremendously in the last decade with focus on irrigation and schemes directed towards improvement in the rural social infrastructure.”

According to the Minister, the current global situation presents both challenges and potential opportunities that require a coordinated and calculated effort to capitalize on. To achieve this goal for the benefit of the state and country, key stakeholders must come together and chart out a clear path. The upcoming event, “The Food Conclave,” aims to create a platform for this purpose, providing an opportunity to bring together stakeholders and facilitate discussions on how best to move forward in the food industry.

The upcoming event will focus on five predominant thematic tracks, namely Agriculture (green), Edible Oil (yellow), Dairy (white), Meat & Poultry (pink), and Aquaculture (blue). Knowledge partners for each track, including The World Economic Forum-India, Indian Vegetable Oil Producers Association (IVPA), Indian Dairy Association, Heifer International, and Society of Aquaculture Professionals, have identified key areas for discussion. These thematic tracks and identified areas of discussion are intended to provide a comprehensive platform for stakeholders to engage with and address crucial issues and opportunities in their respective industries.

During the conclave, there will be 27 panel discussions, 5 roundtables, and over 40 one-on-one meetings between government and industry leaders. These diverse formats of engagement aim to facilitate comprehensive discussions and constructive interactions between participants. The event is expected to be an impactful platform for driving the growth and development of the food industry in Telangana and beyond.

The upcoming event is poised to draw in the most prominent and esteemed industry leaders and experts in the agri-food sector throughout India. The presence of such notable individuals is expected to make the event an exceptional platform for networking, sharing valuable knowledge, and discussing key issues affecting the industry.

Zero Cow Factory secures $4 million in funding to revolutionize animal-free protein production

Zero Cow Factory, a biotechnology startup based in India, announced on Wednesday that it has raised $4 million (INR 32 crore) in seed funding. The company claims to be the first in India to create animal-free protein and dairy products by utilizing bioengineering microbes and precision fermentation techniques.

Green Frontier Capital, GVFL (previously Gujarat Venture Finance Limited), and pi Ventures co-led the funding round for Zero Cow Factory. Additionally, Pascual Innoventures, the investment arm of the Spanish dairy company Calidad Pascual, was among the investors who participated in the funding.

With the $4 million in seed funding, Zero Cow Factory aims to accelerate its research and development activities, increase production capacity, and obtain regulatory approvals required for market entry.

Zero Cow Factory was established in 2021 by Sohil Kapadia and Parini Kapadia in Surat. The company’s mission is to revolutionize the dairy industry by producing animal-free milk proteins and dairy products in a sustainable manner. Their product is a novel substitute for cow’s milk protein that mimics its taste, texture, nutrient profile, and appearance.

CEO Sohil Kapadia CEO of Zero Cow Factory, said, ā€œCurrently only four countries have allowed for products such as ours. Now, more and more companies are coming up. When we started, India was not ready regulatory-wise but now it’s the fourth country having made some progress,ā€ 

He added, ā€œWe are looking at starting from more mature markets like the United States and Singapore, and on the basis of regulatory approvals, India, too.ā€

According to the company, they have developed a patented technology that allows them to produce dairy proteins, including casein and whey, without involving animals.

ā€œThe company’s first product is A2 Beta- casein, which is also healthier as the A1 milk protein that causes indigestion is absent from the product. The aim is to be the first company to get global regulatory approval for this protein,ā€ the company said in a statement.

Zero Cow Factory stated that the recently created protein will be utilized as a component to develop a variety of sustainable food and dairy products, such as cheese, yogurt, ice cream, and dietary supplements. These products will cater to the requirements of the food, dairy, CPG, nutraceutical, and dietary supplement sectors.

Zero Cow Factory asserted that the new protein is devoid of lactose, antibiotics, growth hormones, cholesterol, and saturated fat. They also claimed that the protein is produced through a more eco-friendly process, requiring 99% less land, 98% less water, 84% less carbon dioxide equivalent, and 65% less energy consumption compared to traditional dairy methods.

Zero Cow Factory has confirmed that they have successfully demonstrated the proof of concept for animal-free casein production at the laboratory scale using a small bioreactor. With the newly acquired funding, the company plans to expedite the development of a pilot facility in Gujarat for commercial production.

Discussions on with potential partners:

Zero Cow Factory has opted for the B2B approach as they initiate their business, and they have revealed that they are in discussions with multiple companies from the CPG, dairy, and nutraceutical sectors who have expressed interest in collaborating with them to develop products using Zero Cow Factory’s milk proteins as ingredients, which will replace milk in their supply chain.

Sandiip Bhammer, Co-Managing Partner and Founder at Green Frontier Capital said, ā€œWith cattle being the No.1 agricultural source of greenhouse gases, precision fermentation startups have the potential to disrupt the dairy industry globally. If the world (and India) has to achieve its net zero goals, there needs to be a pivot rather quickly to sustainable solutions like precision fermentation and, in that regard, Zero Cow Factory, is working assiduously on developing its own proprietary A2 casein-based solution, a weakness that plant-based ingredients have not yet been able to address successfully.ā€

Zero Cow Factory had previously raised an unspecified amount of pre-seed funding from foodtech investors Artesian VC and Brinc. The company is also part of innovation accelerators across the globe, including Mylkcubator in Spain, MassChallenge in Switzerland, and Plug and Play in the United States.

The live cooking demonstration was a popular event that attracted a diverse audience, including food and lifestyle media, lifestyle influencers, chefs, culinary students, and hundreds of fans from all over India.

Chef Martin Yan has a career spanning more than four decades and is a global brand ambassador of American Pistachio Growers. He has traveled worldwide, sharing his extensive culinary knowledge and tips for personal enrichment with audiences from multiple generations.

Chef Yan’s diverse culinary expertise and award-winning experiences span several continents, shaped by his work on over 3,500 culinary and travel TV shows, 32 cookbooks, and several restaurants in North America and Asia.

He is also the host of the popular show Yan Can Cook… So Can You, which has been airing for 44 years. Chef Yan’s efforts have been recognized with multiple James Beard Awards throughout his career, including the prestigious lifetime achievement award in 2022.

BookMyChef launches mobile platform for seamless on-demand chef and hospitality services

Hyderabad based startup BookMyChef (BMC) has announced the launch of a mobile platform. This platform provides customers with on-demand chef and hospitality services, allowing them to invite professional chefs into their kitchens for a unique culinary experience. Additionally, this service simplifies the process of hosting events, making it more accessible for people to entertain guests.

According to Shankar Krishnamurthy, the Co-founder of BMC and Hyderabad chapter head of the National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI), the app is designed to benefit not only customers seeking personalized and delectable cuisine, but also to support hospitality professionals who are particularly susceptible to market fluctuations.

Shankar Krishnamurthy said that the idea was born out of a need to provide a platform for chefs to connect with people who want to savour good food at home.

“At the same time, we want to work towards promoting sustainable practices including reducing plastic waste and offering healthy, wellness-integrated food options. We also hope to create additional income opportunities for hospitality professionals who have been severely affected by the pandemic,” he said.

Krishnamurthy highlighted the distinctive characteristics of the app, stating that the booking process for on-demand services is effortless. Users are only required to register and verify their account in order to access this feature.

He added, “After that, they will need to enter their event date, time, number of guests and choice of cuisine. The app will show the user a menu, which the user can choose as per their taste. Before checkout, the user can also opt for additional services for their event, such as a server or a bartender.ā€

After the user has paid the booking fee, BookMyChef will confirm the reservation and assign a chef to the customer. Krishnamurthy explained that the chefs are compensated based on the amount of effort required, with their fees calculated based on the number of guests and menu items.

Krishnamurthy further stated that BookMyChef takes great care in selecting its chefs, conducting extensive vetting procedures that include background checks, assessments of their culinary training and experience, and even cooking tests.

The app’s current Minimum Viable Product (MVP) beta version features a selection of continental, oriental, north Indian, and south Indian cuisines. The app is available for both Android and iOS platforms, and users can choose a cuisine and select up to 10 items for service. There is no minimum order quantity, and users can book an event for up to 20 guests.

When checking out, users of the app have the option to add on services such as bartenders, service staff, and cleaners to ensure a hassle-free event at an affordable price. Additionally, users can decide whether to supply their own ingredients or request BookMyChef to source them for an extra charge.

According to Krishnamurthy, the team is planning to first launch the services in Mumbai and Delhi as a pilot before scaling up to a full-fledged operation.

PhonePe expands e-commerce portfolio with Pincode, a hyperlocal app on Open Network

PhonePe Pvt Ltd, a leading digital payments firm in India, backed by global retail giant Walmart Inc, has unveiled its latest offering, an app called Pincode, on the Indian government’s Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) platform. 

The ONDC, launched in the previous year, is an initiative aimed at enabling small merchants and local stores across India to access the technologies and processes that are typically utilized by large e-commerce platforms such as Amazon and Walmart.

Pincode, currently available only in Bengaluru, one of India’s major cities, can be downloaded from both the Google Play Store and the App Store, as confirmed in a statement from PhonePe. The app is designed to focus on hyperlocal commerce, with a wide range of categories including groceries, food, pharma, electronics, home decor, and fashion, among others.

PhonePe has set ambitious goals for Pincode, with Chief Executive Sameer Nigam stating that the company aims to process 100,000 orders per day on the app by December. However, the rollout of the service will be cautious, with plans to initially launch in no more than 10 cities during the first year of operation, as stated by Nigam. This approach allows PhonePe to carefully evaluate and refine its operations before expanding further.

It’s worth mentioning that PhonePe already has an e-commerce platform called Switch, which offers a wide range of services such as food delivery, grocery shopping, travel booking, hotel reservations, retail fashion, and healthcare, all integrated within its app.

PhonePe’s partnership with Walmart has been significant in its growth journey. In March, the company raised $200 million in funding from Walmart at a pre-money valuation of $12 billion, making it India’s most valuable payments firm. 

The introduction of Pincode on the ONDC platform further solidifies PhonePe’s commitment to leveraging the vast potential of the Indian e-commerce market and its ambition to empower local merchants and provide seamless digital commerce experiences to Indian consumers.

With Pincode, PhonePe aims to tap into the hyperlocal commerce segment, which has been gaining traction in India, especially with the rise of online shopping during the Covid-19 pandemic. By leveraging the ONDC platform, PhonePe seeks to bridge the gap between small merchants and consumers, providing a user-friendly and efficient platform for local commerce. 

The company’s vision is to contribute to the growth of the Indian economy by empowering small merchants and local stores, while also providing a convenient and reliable shopping experience for consumers.

PhonePe’s foray into hyperlocal commerce through Pincode comes at a time when the e-commerce landscape in India is highly competitive, with players like Amazon, Flipkart, and others vying for market share.
