Tim Hortons is on a rapid expansion spree in India, demonstrating its commitment to establishing a strong presence in the country. Having initially entered the Indian market in August with a store in Delhi, this renowned Canadian coffee chain has wasted no time in making its mark. With a successful rollout of 13 outlets across the Delhi-NCR and Punjab regions in the north, Tim Hortons is now gearing up for its next milestone: the launch of two new stores in Mumbai. These upcoming openings in Bandra on May 27 and Andheri on May 28 will bring the total number of Tim Hortons stores in India to 15, solidifying its foothold and catering to coffee lovers in yet another major city.

According to Tarun Jain, the CEO of Tim Hortons India, the company has strategically focused on establishing a stronger presence in the northern region before venturing into other areas of the country.

“The response has been fantastic in the north. Whatever targets we set in terms of store performance, expansion or cities we wanted to be in, we’ve exceeded all of that and we’re now in Mumbai and we’re seeing a lot of excitement here after we announced the dates,” Jain added.

In the future, it is expected that Mumbai will witness an increase in the number of Tim Hortons stores. However, immediate expansion plans following the establishment of these stores will be focused on cities near Mumbai, such as Pune, by the end of this year. Additionally, Tim Hortons has intentions to enter Bengaluru in the current year, with ongoing efforts to identify suitable locations for stores. Furthermore, the company has its sights set on cities like Ahmedabad for potential expansion in the future.

Jain, however, emphasizes that Tim Hortons does not have a specific target for the number of stores in the Indian market. Their expansion plans also involve opening additional stores through various channels in existing markets such as Delhi.

Tim Hortons’ entry into Mumbai and its subsequent fast-paced expansion coincides with a thriving coffee culture in India, coupled with intensified competition within the coffee chain industry. In a recent development, Reliance Retail introduced the British coffee chain Pret A Manger to India, which currently operates two stores in Mumbai. Tata Starbucks has also been rapidly expanding its footprint and now boasts 341 stores across the country. In an effort to attract a larger consumer base, Tata Starbucks recently revamped its menu to include smaller-sized and more affordable beverage and food options.

In recent years, a number of homegrown coffee chains such as Subko, Third Wave Coffee, and Blue Tokai have emerged and witnessed substantial expansion in their presence. These homegrown chains have made their mark in the coffee industry, adding to the diverse range of options available to coffee enthusiasts.

According to Jain, competition plays a positive role in a growing market as it fosters market development and drives increased consumption. He emphasizes that Tim Hortons will distinguish itself through its wide variety of offerings, including made-to-order fresh food available at its cafés.

Tim Hortons’ beverage prices align with those of its rivals, Tata Starbucks and Pret, while its food items are available at a starting price as low as INR 39, providing customers with economical choices.

Similar to other international coffee chains that have been placing greater emphasis on adapting their menus to local preferences, Tim Hortons is introducing localized food options on its menus. Alongside globally recognized items like French Vanilla coffee, Java Chip beverage, and Timbits, Tim Hortons is incorporating menu offerings that cater specifically to the local palate.

“Our learning has been that since we’re an international brand, there’s a set of expectations when we come into a market, a legacy that they expect us to deliver on along with a lot of local love to adapt to tastes locally. We have experimented a lot with food, which is a continuous process,” Jain said, adding that it wants to be competitive on pricing.

Tim Hortons makes striking entrance into Indian market, embraces regional cuisine

To distinguish itself from competitors, the company also introduced a unique approach by incorporating customized regional food items into its menu. (Representative Image)

Last August, Tim Hortons, the esteemed Canadian coffee brand, entered the Indian market with its expansion strategy. To distinguish itself from competitors, the company also introduced a unique approach by incorporating customized regional food items into its menu.

Following its successful venture in the northern region, Tim Hortons has extended its operations to West India. As part of its expansion, the brand now offers delectable options like Makhni Pasta, while also preparing to introduce delightful additions such as Pinwheel Samosa and Baida Roti Cigar-rolls. This move showcases Tim Hortons’ commitment to catering to regional preferences and diversifying its menu offerings.

Tarun Jain, Chief Executive Officer of Tim Hortons India, said, “India is a very different market in terms of the choices and taste preferences, so when we launched in India, there’s a lot of work which went into the backend, to kind of put forward a menu which has got decent amount of variety and lot of local adaptations.”

“When we launched in the north, we had makhni pasta for example, which was more suited to the localities there. Now, when we are coming to Mumbai, we have added a couple of products like a Samosa and a Baida roll which is more in sync with the local taste preferences in Mumbai.”

Starbucks India, another coffee chain , recently increased Indian options on its menu. It added masala chai, elaichi chai and milkshakes and pre-packed sandwiches and other food items.

In India, Tim Hortons offers Timbits, also known as ‘donut holes,’ as their most budget-friendly food item, priced at INR 39.

Jain is of the opinion that Tim Hortons has made a timely entry into the Indian market. He said, “I think this is a great time to enter India.”

According to Jain, Tim Hortons is actively contemplating expansion into tier 1 markets. As of now, the chain has successfully opened 13 stores in North India.

“I think this is a great time to enter India, because the market is going through a lot of evolution and a lot of change. The cafe market is really imploding with the opportunity. So, I think it’s a great time to be into the market,” he said.

“The demand is growing at a great pace. I think cafes have outperformed the F&B industry in India and I think coffee houses are probably the largest share of that growth.”

As per the analysis conducted by IMARC Group, the pub, bar, café, and lounge (PBCL) market in India is projected to exhibit a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 13.3 percent from 2023 to 2028.

Additionally, the report highlights that the PBCL market in India is experiencing robust growth due to the growing demand for socializing and gathering in eateries that provide distinctive ambiance, entertainment, and a diverse range of food and beverages.

“The primary factor driving the India pub, bar, café and lounge market is the growing disposable incomes across the country… Moreover, brands are increasingly focusing on factors such as varied food offerings, ambience, and customer engagement to ensure the longevity and strength of their businesses and create a niche for this segment,” the report said.

On Thursday, Reliance Consumer Products (RCPL), the FMCG subsidiary of Reliance Retail Ventures (RRVL), issued a press release confirming the finalization of its acquisition of a controlling interest in Lotus Chocolate Company Ltd.

RCPL has finalized the acquisition of a 51% ownership interest in Lotus Chocolate for a combined sum of INR 74 crore. In addition, RCPL has made an investment of INR 25 crore by subscribing to non-cumulative redeemable preference shares of Lotus.

According to its statement, RCPL has successfully concluded the acquisition of equity shares through an open offer conducted in accordance with SEBI Takeover Regulations. As of May 24, 2023, RCPL has assumed complete control of the company.

In late December, RCPL announced its intention to acquire a 51% stake in Lotus Chocolate Company for INR 74 crore. Additionally, RCPL expressed its plans to acquire an additional 26% stake through an open offer.

In a statement, the FMCG division of Reliance Industries stated that the capital infusion would support the growth and expansion of Lotus. The funding would enable Lotus to become a versatile manufacturer of confectionery, cocoa, chocolate derivatives, and related products, catering to both industrial and consumer markets.

“The investment in Lotus underlines our commitment to further boost indigenously developed daily use high-quality products, to serve a broad customer spectrum at affordable prices,” Isha Ambani, the Executive Director of Reliance Retail, was quoted as saying in the release.

The chocolate company posted sales of INR 87 crore during the year ended March 2022 with net profit of INR 6 crore. “We are delighted to enter into this partnership with Reliance. We have a vision to build a world class confectionery products business across customer segments backed by best-in-class manufacturing capabilities and talent. Our strategic partnership with Reliance, through this investment, will further enable this vision and accelerate Lotus’ transformation,” Abhijit Pai, Founder-Promoter of Lotus, said.

Reliance Retail’s acquisition of Lotus Chocolate aligns with its strategic objective of expanding its presence in the fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) sector, which the company recently entered. This move positions Reliance’s subsidiary to enter into competition with confectionery manufacturers such as Britannia Industries and Nestle India.

RRVL, a subsidiary of Reliance Industries led by Mukesh Ambani, serves as the holding company for all retail enterprises within the Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) group.

During the annual general meeting held in August 2022, Mukesh Ambani, the Chairman of Reliance Industries Limited (RIL), unveiled the conglomerate’s intention to venture into the thriving fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) sector.

Former McDonald’s MD Vikram Bakshi acquires stake in Aku’s, fueling the growth of premium food startup

In a noteworthy development, Vikram Bakshi, the former Managing Director of McDonald’s North and East, has made a strategic move by acquiring an equity stake in Aku’s, a promising startup focusing on premium foods. Aku’s has gained significant backing from The Brrgrr Co., a renowned company specializing in DIY western-cuisine foods. This partnership highlights Bakshi’s continued interest in the food industry and his recognition of Aku’s potential in the market.

Bakshi, having previously found success with McDonald’s, is making a remarkable comeback in the burger business for the second time.

Confirming the development, Bakshi said the deal is in the form of equity investment. Declining to disclose other details of the deal, he said the brand will be scaled up “to a much larger audience than it already is”.

According to information available on its website, The Brrgrr Co, founded in 2020 by Delhi-based Chef Akriti Malhotra, recently announced on one of its social media pages that it has secured funding from Bakshi. The company specializes in offering hand-crafted fresh buns, patties, and sauces.

“The time is ripe to upgrade the burger culture in India. Their positioning connects with the present demand of millennials and Gen Z,” Bakshi said.

Within the culinary realm, gourmet western-style cuisine occupies a unique and expanding space. Over the past year, specialized brands such as AvoBeet and Feta from Nino Burgers, along with Louis Burger and Speak Burgers, have successfully scaled up their operations, catering to the growing demand in this segment.

However, the landscape of mass western-style fast foods experienced a notable shift in the March quarter. Major quick-service restaurant chains witnessed either stagnant or declining growth as consumers gravitated towards lower-priced options. This resulted in the emergence of multiple boutique brands like Leo’s, Tossin, GoPizza, and MojoPizza, which quickly gained traction and began encroaching on the market share of larger companies.

In May 2019, McDonald’s made an announcement regarding the resolution of its legal dispute with Bakshi. The US-based chain successfully reached an out-of-court settlement and decided to acquire Bakshi’s stake in Connaught Plaza Restaurants Pvt Ltd (CPRL), the company responsible for operating McDonald’s restaurants in the northern and eastern regions of India. This settlement marked the end of a prolonged legal battle between the two parties.

Prior to that, Bakshi had been at the helm of McDonald’s operations in the north and east regions for almost two decades.

Dairy industry reduces milk procurement price by 10%, retail rates remain unchanged

0
milkprices

According to industry executives, leading dairies in northern India and Maharashtra have slashed the procurement price of milk by 10% over the past two weeks. However, consumers will not experience any immediate advantages from this reduction. The executives explained that the only relief for consumers is the assurance that milk prices will not be raised in the next few months.

Just under two months ago, a segment of the Indian dairy industry had appealed to the central government for relaxed import regulations on milk products like skimmed milk powder (SMP) and white butter. This request was made to address the “acute” shortage of milk in the country. However, in the past two weeks, prices of SMP and butter have experienced a decline of 5-10%.

Experts have attributed the decline in prices to weather anomalies and the release of stockpiled inventory in the market. Industry veterans explained that the delayed arrival of the summer season has hindered the demand for ice cream, curd, buttermilk, and other beverages, which are typically in high demand during peak summer. Consequently, hoarded stocks are being made available in the market. Furthermore, the demand for milk and milk products has been affected by a 14-15% price increase over the past 15 months, leading to reduced consumer demand.

In the past two weeks, the prices of white butter and skimmed milk powder have experienced a decline of 5-10%.

RS Sodhi, President, Indian Dairy Association., said, “The winter season was extended, while there was a delay in summer due to the unseasonal rainfall. Consumers had reduced consumption as prices increased substantially. Thirdly, the demand for summer products like ice cream, curd, buttermilk, lassi and other milk-based beverages has yet not hit the peak summer demand in many markets of the country.”

The decrease in prices of skimmed milk powder (SMP) and butter has adversely affected private dairies in regions such as Maharashtra, Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh, which are located around Delhi. Consequently, the procurement price of milk in these states has been reduced by INR 3-5 per litre. Over the past two weeks, the price of SMP has declined by INR 20-30 per kg, now ranging between INR 290-310 per kg. Similarly, the price of butter has fallen by INR 25-30 per kg to INR 390-405 per kg.

“Consumers will not have to face any further increase in milk prices. The correction in milk procurement prices from the very high levels is a win-win situation for the farmers, consumers as well as the dairies,” said Sodhi.

Anise Seeds

In the world of health and wellness, there’s always a new superfood that captures everyone’s attention. From kale to quinoa, chia seeds to turmeric, we’ve seen trends come and go. But amidst all the hype, there’s one superfood that’s gaining significant traction among health gurus and wellness enthusiasts – anise seeds.

These tiny, aromatic seeds have been used for centuries in various cultures for both culinary and medicinal purposes. However, it’s only now that their true potential as a powerhouse of health benefits is being recognized. So, what is it about anise seeds that have health gurus raving about them?

Let’s delve into the world of anise seeds and discover why they’re being hailed as the ultimate superfood for wellness and vitality.

What are Anise Seeds?

Anise seeds, scientifically known as Pimpinella anisum, are small, oval-shaped seeds with a distinctive licorice-like flavor and aroma. They are native to the Mediterranean region and have been used in traditional medicine and cooking for centuries. Anise seeds are often used as a flavoring agent in beverages, desserts, and savory dishes, adding a unique and aromatic twist to culinary creations. However, it’s their remarkable health benefits that have recently captured the attention of health enthusiasts and experts.

Anise Seeds for Digestive Health

One of the primary reasons health gurus are raving about anise seeds is their exceptional digestive benefits. Anise seeds have long been used as a natural remedy for various digestive ailments, including bloating, indigestion, and flatulence. These seeds contain compounds that promote the production of digestive enzymes, aiding in the breakdown and assimilation of food. Additionally, anise seeds possess carminative properties, meaning they help relieve gas and ease discomfort in the gastrointestinal tract. Incorporating anise seeds into your diet or consuming them as a herbal tea can help soothe your digestive system and promote better overall gut health.

Boosting Immunity and Respiratory Health

Anise seeds are also known for their immune-boosting properties. They are rich in antioxidants, including flavonoids, which help protect the body against free radicals and oxidative stress. Anise seeds also contain antimicrobial properties, making them effective in fighting off harmful bacteria and viruses. Regular consumption of anise seeds can strengthen the immune system, reduce the risk of infections, and promote overall well-being.

Furthermore, anise seeds have been used traditionally to support respiratory health. The aromatic compounds in these seeds can help relieve congestion, coughs, and respiratory discomfort. Anise seed tea is often used as a natural remedy for respiratory conditions like bronchitis and asthma. The expectorant properties of anise seeds help loosen mucus and phlegm, making it easier to breathe and promoting respiratory health.

Anise Seeds for Hormonal Balance

Hormonal balance is crucial for overall health and well-being, and anise seeds may play a role in supporting this balance. These seeds contain phytoestrogens, plant compounds that have a mild estrogenic effect in the body. Phytoestrogens can help regulate hormone levels and alleviate symptoms associated with hormonal imbalances, such as menstrual irregularities, hot flashes, and mood swings. Anise seeds may provide natural support for women experiencing hormonal changes during menstruation or menopause.

Additionally, anise seeds have been traditionally used as a galactagogue, a substance that promotes milk production in breastfeeding mothers. Nursing mothers often turn to anise seed tea or supplements to help increase milk supply naturally.

Anti-Inflammatory and Antioxidant Properties

Chronic inflammation and oxidative stress are underlying factors in many health conditions, including heart disease, diabetes, and certain cancers. Anise seeds possess anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce inflammation in the body. The antioxidants present in anise seeds help neutralize free radicals and protect cells from damage, promoting overall cellular health. By incorporating anise seeds into your diet, you can potentially reduce the risk of chronic diseases and support your body’s natural defense mechanisms.

How to Incorporate Anise Seeds into Your Diet

Now that we understand the incredible health benefits of anise seeds, the next question is: How can we incorporate them into our daily diet? Fortunately, there are various ways to enjoy the goodness of anise seeds.

  • Herbal Tea: Anise seed tea is a popular and soothing beverage. Simply steep crushed anise seeds in hot water for a few minutes, strain, and enjoy. You can also experiment with adding other herbs like fennel or mint to enhance the flavor.
  • Culinary Uses: Anise seeds are a versatile spice that can be used in both sweet and savory dishes. They are often used in baked goods, such as bread, cookies, and pastries, to add a subtle licorice flavor. Anise seeds can also be sprinkled on roasted vegetables, added to soups or stews, or used as a seasoning for meat and fish dishes.
  • Homemade Remedies: You can create homemade remedies using anise seeds to address specific health concerns. For example, mixing crushed anise seeds with honey can create a natural cough syrup, while infusing anise seeds in oil can produce a soothing massage oil for digestive discomfort.
  • Anise Seed Supplements: If you prefer a more concentrated form, anise seed supplements are available in capsule or liquid extract form. Consult with a healthcare professional to determine the appropriate dosage and usage.

As with any new addition to your diet, it’s essential to start with small amounts and observe how your body responds. Some individuals may have allergies or sensitivities to anise seeds, so it’s best to consult a healthcare professional if you have any concerns.

Embracing the Power of Anise Seeds

Anise seeds are truly nature’s gift for wellness and vitality. Their unique flavor, coupled with their remarkable health benefits, makes them a valuable addition to any healthy diet. Whether you choose to enjoy them in culinary creations, sip on anise seed tea, or incorporate them into homemade remedies, the possibilities are endless. However, it’s important to remember that anise seeds are not a magic cure-all. They are best used as part of a balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.

If you’re looking to enhance your well-being and embrace the power of anise seeds, remember to source high-quality seeds from reputable suppliers. Organic and sustainably grown anise seeds are recommended to ensure optimal purity and potency. So, join the ranks of health gurus and wellness enthusiasts who are going crazy over anise seeds, and discover the countless ways they can transform your health and vitality. Protein powerhouse unveiled: Why black beans are the ultimate game-changer for vegans and fitness enthusiasts!

0
black beans

In the world of nutrition, protein is often hailed as the king of macronutrients. It plays a crucial role in building and repairing tissues, supporting immune function, and promoting overall health and well-being. While animal-based sources like meat, eggs, and dairy products are commonly associated with protein, there is a rising star in the plant-based realm that has been gaining significant attention: black beans. These small but mighty legumes have emerged as a protein powerhouse, offering a wide array of benefits for vegans and fitness enthusiasts alike.

In this article, we delve into the world of black beans and explore why they are the ultimate game-changer for those seeking a nutritious and protein-rich diet.

Black beans, scientifically known as Phaseolus vulgaris, have been cultivated and consumed for centuries across different cultures. Originating from Central and South America, black beans have found their way into cuisines around the world, thanks to their versatility, distinct flavor, and remarkable nutritional profile. They are a staple ingredient in various traditional dishes, from Latin American feijoada to Indian rajma. However, it is their exceptional protein content that has propelled them into the spotlight.

One of the most remarkable aspects of black beans is their high protein content. These legumes pack a powerful punch, providing approximately 15 grams of protein per cooked cup (approximately 172 grams). This makes them an excellent plant-based protein source that can rival many animal-based counterparts. For vegans and vegetarians, who rely on plant-based options to meet their protein needs, black beans offer a convenient and wholesome solution.

But it’s not just about the quantity of protein; the quality of protein matters too.

Black beans boast a well-balanced amino acid profile, containing all the essential amino acids that our bodies require for optimal functioning. This is particularly significant because plant-based protein sources often lack one or more essential amino acids. However, black beans provide a complete protein package, making them a valuable asset for vegans and fitness enthusiasts looking to meet their protein requirements.

In addition to being a rich source of protein, black beans are also brimming with dietary fiber. A single cup of cooked black beans contains around 15 grams of fiber, which is over half of the recommended daily intake for adults. This high fiber content not only promotes digestive health but also aids in weight management by enhancing satiety and preventing overeating. It also helps regulate blood sugar levels, making black beans an ideal choice for individuals with diabetes or those aiming to maintain stable energy levels throughout the day.

Black beans are also a nutritional goldmine when it comes to vitamins and minerals. They are an excellent source of folate, iron, magnesium, and potassium, among others. Folate plays a vital role in cell division and supports the formation of DNA and RNA, making it crucial for growth and development. Iron is essential for transporting oxygen in the body, while magnesium and potassium contribute to heart health, muscle function, and overall well-being. Incorporating black beans into your diet can help ensure that you’re not only getting an ample supply of protein but also reaping the benefits of these essential nutrients.

Moreover, black beans offer several additional health advantages. Their rich antioxidant content helps combat oxidative stress and inflammation, reducing the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease and certain types of cancer.
