Online food delivery platforms log just 7% spike in orders during IPL 2023

According to a recent report, online food delivery platforms experienced a moderate 7 percent increase in orders throughout the recently concluded Indian Premier League (IPL) season. The findings were revealed on Friday.

The report highlighted that during IPL-2020, online food delivery platforms, led by popular names like Zomato and Swiggy, achieved an impressive 50 percent growth in food orders.

A report conducted by Redseer Strategy Consultants indicated that online food delivery platforms (OFD) took a relatively subdued approach during IPL-2023, leading to a modest upturn in their business.

From 2017 to 2020, the giants of online food delivery (OFD) made a notable impact on prime-time television with their advertisements during the IPL seasons.

“They enticed viewers with attractive discounts ranging from 50-60 per cent at a wide array of restaurants. Additionally, they integrated their offerings with OTT platforms and created customised advertisements for maximum impact,” said Kushal Bhatnagar, Associate Partner, Redseer Strategy Consultants.

As a result of these efforts, the IPL 2020 season witnessed a substantial increase of over 50 percent, attributed to the impactful presence of online food delivery (OFD) giants.

However, the approach noticeably changed during the 2023 IPL season.

Although the engagement from OFD platforms was limited, the IPL-2023 season generated significant online food ordering activity among consumers in tier 2 cities and beyond. In these markets, the spike in food orders was nearly 2.5 times higher compared to more mature consumers in metro and tier 1 cities.

“This hints towards the ability of spike events to drive habit formation among not-so-mature-users in India,” said the report.

Indian Hotels Company (IHCL), India’s premier hospitality company, made a significant announcement today regarding its latest venture. IHCL has signed an agreement to acquire a resort in Naukuchiatal, Uttarakhand, which will undergo a complete transformation. Following extensive renovations and expansion, the resort will be rebranded as an IHCL – SeleQtions hotel. This strategic move adds another remarkable property to IHCL’s portfolio, reinforcing its position as the country’s largest and most esteemed hospitality company.

Nestled on a sprawling 4-acre expanse, this enchanting resort features 88 luxurious rooms and is ideally situated along the picturesque Naukuchiatal Lake. Guests can indulge in breathtaking panoramic views of the glistening water and the majestic Himalayan foothills. The resort prides itself on its diverse dining experiences, including an all-day diner, a stylish bar, and a specialty restaurant situated on elevated decks that overlook the shimmering lake.

Indian rice prices rebound slightly after recent dip, attracting Asian buyers

The prices of rice exported from India, one of the leading hubs, experienced a modest increase this week after reaching a six-month low. The decline in prices attracted buyers from various Asian countries, but the comparatively higher rates in Vietnam raised concerns about future demand.

The price range for India’s 5% broken parboiled rice variety was revised upwards this week to $375-$380 per tonne, representing a rise from the previous week’s range of $374-$378.

“Buying from Asian countries has improved a bit because of lower prices, although the majority of buyers are still on the sidelines,” said an exporter based at Kakinada in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh.

According to the food minister of Bangladesh, the neighboring country that frequently relies on rice imports to address shortages resulting from natural disasters like floods, there is no need for rice imports this year.

“There is a good harvest in the country, so there is no need to import rice,” Food Minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder told reporters.

The price for Vietnam’s 5% broken rice remained steady this week, with offers ranging from $490 to $495 per tonne. This price level has remained unchanged from the previous week and represents the highest level observed since late April.

“Trading activity is quiet as some buyers are slowing their purchases due to high prices,” a trader based in Ho Chi Minh City said.

According to government data released on Monday, Vietnam’s rice exports in the first five months of this year are projected to have increased by approximately 40.8% compared to the same period last year, reaching a total of 3.9 million tonnes. The estimated rice shipments from Vietnam in May alone amounted to 1 million tonnes.

Amidst subdued demand and a weaker baht, the prices of Thailand’s 5% broken rice remained relatively stable at $495 per tonne, showing little change compared to the range of $495-$500 quoted last week.

“We have to wait for additional supply to be released,” said a Bangkok-based trader.
