Zume Inc., a former robot pizza business that once epitomized the extravagance of pre-pandemic venture investing, has reportedly shut down its operations, as confirmed by two individuals with knowledge of the matter.

Zume Inc., which had previously raised approximately $450 million from investors including SoftBank Group Corp.’s Vision Fund, has reportedly enlisted the assistance of restructuring firm Sherwood Partners to handle the sale of its assets, according to one of the individuals familiar with the situation.

Zume did not respond to requests for comment.

Established in 2015, Zume Inc. joined a growing list of companies aiming to revolutionize the pizza-making process with the use of robots. However, despite their ambitions, the concept failed to gain traction. The technology faced numerous technical hurdles, including the difficulty of preventing melted cheese from sliding off the pizzas as they baked inside moving trucks.

In January 2020, Zume Inc. underwent a substantial downsizing, resulting in a reduction of over half of its employees. Simultaneously, the company pivoted its focus to incorporate compostable packaging, leveraging the expertise of Pivot Packaging, a southern California company that Zume had acquired.

ITC Limited and other companies submit resolution plans for Shakti Bhog Foods as insolvency proceedings continue

ITC Limited and two other companies have stepped forward to submit resolution plans for Shakti Bhog foods, a wheat flour manufacturer based in North India. Sources familiar with the matter reveal that Shakti Bhog has defaulted on a significant amount of bank loans, totaling INR 7,000 crore. As a result, the company is currently undergoing insolvency proceedings at the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT).

According to the sources, ITC Limited, headquartered in Kolkata, has presented a resolution plan focused on acquiring Shakti Bhog foods’ brands. On the other hand, the two other bidders have submitted plans aimed at taking over the entire company as a going concern. This means they intend to acquire the entirety of Shakti Bhog foods, including its operations and assets.

Adding to the bid from ITC Limited, two other companies, Vidya Polymer and Shanti GD Ispat and Power Limited, have also submitted their respective resolution plans for Shakti Bhog foods. While ITC Limited’s plan focuses on acquiring the company’s brands, the other two bidders have expressed their intent to take over the entire company as a going concern.

Traditionally, bankers prefer offers that encompass the entirety of the company. However, with the evolution of regulations under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, piecemeal sales of assets belonging to bankrupt companies are now allowed.

Notably, the State Bank of India has provided a loan of INR 4,700 crore to Shakti Bhog foods.

In response to queries, a representative from ITC Limited stated, “We do not comment on market speculation.”

Queries sent to Vidya Polymer and Shanti GD Ispat and Power Limited remained unanswered as both companies did not respond.

According to sources, Union Bank of India, Punjab National Bank, and Standard Chartered Bank are among the other major lenders to the company. These banks might have to face a substantial reduction of up to 95% in the amount they can recover, as it is unlikely that the resolution offers will exceed INR 500 crore.

“There are barely any assets left in the company. The value is in the brands,” said an executive aware of the matter.

Shakti Bhog Foods was admitted to insolvency proceedings by the bankruptcy tribunal on September 22, 2022. Before the amalgamation of the associate banks with the parent bank in 2017, State Bank of India’s associated banks, namely State Bank of Mysore, State Bank of Patiala, State Bank of Bikaner and Jaipur, and State Bank of Travancore, had extended loans to the company.

A total of 13 banks and asset reconstruction companies have provided loans to the company. Kewal Krishan Kumar, the former Chairman and Managing Director of the company, is currently under investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation and the Enforcement Directorate for alleged defaults on bank loans.

In May, there was a significant decline in global food costs, marking the lowest level observed in the past two years. This development has reignited hopes that the persistent inflationary trend affecting supermarket prices may finally start to subside.

In May, the United Nations’ food-commodity price index experienced a decline of 2.6%. This decrease was primarily driven by lower prices in grains, vegetable oil, and dairy products, although it was partially offset by higher costs in sugar and meat. Since reaching its peak in March of the previous year due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the index, which measures the prices of globally-traded agricultural commodities, has dropped by 22%.

Wheat prices are currently hovering close to their lowest levels in over two years due to an abundance of supplies from Russia, which is exerting downward pressure on the market. Additionally, European crops are in favorable condition, further contributing to the downward trend. However, the impact of falling commodity prices on consumers is being delayed as transportation, labor, and energy costs continue to remain high.

Despite the United Nations’ food index experiencing declines in 13 out of the past 14 months, the impact on consumers has been minimal, highlighting how the prices of everyday items are influenced by larger economic forces. Joseph Glauber, a senior fellow at the International Food Policy Research Institute, explains that high consumer food prices can also be highly localized and specific to individual countries.

“It’s really the macro-economy that is driving the food prices,” Glauber said. “We see a number of macroeconomic factors including exchange rates, including energy prices, including wage price inflation and that sort of thing. That affects food prices at the end of the day.”
