Monteverde
You might not be aware, but there are an unbelievable number of former Top Chef contestants living in Chicago. Monteverde in the West Loop is home to culinary excellence and is widely considered to have Chicago’s finest Italian cuisine. The prices are fair, there’s no pressure to dress formally (unless you want to), and all the kinds of pasta, especially the Cacio e Pepe, and Aglio e olio are absolutely delicious. Plan on trying to fit the inevitable leftovers from the Ragu Alla Napoletana (a huge platter full of fusilli, sausage, meatballs, and a massive braised pork shank) into your hotel mini-fridge.

Pequod’s Pizzeria
You probably don’t need us to remind you that deep-dish pizza originated in Chicago. And if you are a first-time visitor, you must sample some. Try Lincoln Park’s Pequod’s first. There’s “caramelized” crust on the deep dish pizza served in a pan (a.k.a. the burnt edges of crispy cheese around the outside of the pie). You and your buddies may be permanently estranged after eating at this pizzeria because the pizza is so good.

J.P. Graziano Grocery & Sub Shop
Established in 1937, long before the West Loop became Chicago’s dining Mecca, this family-run Italian deli and sub shop has become a Chicago institution. They make some of the best Italian subs and sandwiches in the city, despite the fact that the building hasn’t altered much from when it was a meatpacking warehouse.

5 Rabanitos
When you crave Mexican cuisine, you must visit 5 Rabanitos, a restaurant in the Pilsen neighbourhood. You can’t go wrong with anything on the menu, whether it’s tacos, items from the extensive vegetarian menu, carne asada, or the extremely hot ahogada torta. You won’t want to leave because the menu is extensive and the staff is so welcoming.

RPM Steak
Incorporate at least one supper at a trendy, upscale River North restaurant in your itinerary. The type that will knock your wine glass over with its huge menus and hip atmosphere, but whose food will surprise and delight you. RPM Steak satisfies these criteria. It’s the epitome of a downtown Chicago eatery: ostentatious, a little absurd, and tremendously fun. And beneath all that glitz and glamour, you’ll find the city’s finest steaks.
