5 Best Pop Up bars and Restaurants in Austin
It’s nice to have something to do once the sun goes down, and more importantly, it’s a good reason to don tacky holiday sweaters and drink eggnog in public without drawing stares. Fortunately, Austin is home to a plethora of eateries that go all out for the holidays. There are activities happening every day of the month, whether you want to play board games in an inflatable igloo, watch a light show on the lake, or just hang around and eat cookies near a large menorah.
Here’s a list of the 5 best holiday-themed watering holes in Austin.
Gibson Street Bar
To win the title of “best-dressed parking lot,” Gibson Bar doesn’t merely decorate the bar for the holidays; instead, they shut down the lot, cover it with astroturf and a large plastic tent, and turn South Lamar into their very own indoor/outdoor winter paradise. You can sit at one of the many picnic tables under the tent and think it’s much colder than it actually is.
Otopia Rooftop
Rentable inflatable igloos with cocktails and hot cocoa are available at Otopia, located on the top floor of The Otis Hotel by UT. For $300, you can rent an igloo complete with snacks, beverages, games, and even a record player (to use, not to keep). Because playing mindless games by yourself is boring, you can ask up to seven people to join you.
Sunny’s Backyard
Sunny’s, a little bar on East 7th with a huge patio, transforms into a holiday-themed establishment for a short period before the end of 2022. On Thursdays through Saturdays, in addition to their regular culinary menu of vegan bar meals, they also provide a short menu of drink specials and a fully decked-out atmosphere.
Austin Motel
The Austin Motel on South Congress transforms its pool area into a “Winter Wonderland” for the month of December. Stop by any time during the week to take in the seasonal decor, visit “Hunky Santa” on Thursdays, or float around the pool and enjoy Christmas films on Fridays. There will be carols on Saturdays, and on Sundays, the event will transform into a pop-up gift shop promoting various local businesses.
Geraldine’s
The Hotel Van Zandt on Rainey Street offers the unique amenity of reserving an igloo (or at least one of those inflatable ones) in which to enjoy a drink. From the beginning of December, reservations can be made on Fridays and Saturdays; as the holidays draw nearer, a few additional days of the week become available. It will cost you around $100 per person to stay overnight in an igloo and enjoy the record player and board games provided (plus a food and beverage minimum).
Enjoy your time in Austin during the holidays as well as weekends. Being one of the best places to stay, Austin is sure to fill your heart with delicious food and peace from its restaurants.
