On first day at work, Starbucks’ new CEO faces strike across 40 US citiesĀ

Unionized Starbucks Corp. baristas are planning to hold strikes at approximately 100 cafes to demand that the company stop its alleged antiunion coercion. The work stoppage, which organizers say will involve stores in over 40 US cities, is the latest effort by Starbucks Workers United to push for a change by the coffee giant.Ā

The union has already achieved initial success in Buffalo, New York, 15 months ago, and has won elections at around 290 of the company’s approximately 9,000 corporate-owned US cafes. However, the pace of new unionization petitions has slowed down as workers claim that the company has retaliated in stores and has not cooperated during negotiations.

Starbucks, on the other hand, has repeatedly denied all allegations of anti-union activities. The company asserts that it provides leading industry benefits and that it respects employees’ rights to organize and protest. Additionally, the company maintains that it values having a direct relationship with staff, which it considers a core element of its culture. However, Starbucks has accused the union of unfair negotiation tactics, and has argued that US labor board officials are trying to use cases against the company to establish new precedents that would alter existing labor laws.

Philadelphia barista Lydia Fernandez, said, “Thousands of workers who unionized their stores across the country deserve a real seat at the table and we’re going to keep fighting until we get that seat.”  “We will continue with that demand regardless of who the CEO is.”

The work stoppage is scheduled one day before Starbucks’s annual shareholder meeting, which marks the first for the new CEO Laxman Narasimhan, who took over from Howard Schultz earlier this week. The investors, including New York City pension funds, have submitted a resolution calling for a labor-rights audit, and Schultz is scheduled to be grilled by lawmakers at a US Senate committee hearing next week.

The US National Labor Relations Board regional directors have filed 80 complaints against Starbucks, accusing the company of violating the law to impede organizing efforts. These include excluding unionized stores from new benefits, closing cafes, and terminating dozens of activists. Striking baristas from Oregon and Washington state plan to converge for a midday protest outside Starbucks headquarters in Seattle.

The Starbucks Workers United campaign is part of a larger movement aimed at supporting workers’ rights to unionize and collectively bargain for better wages, benefits, and working conditions. The movement has gained momentum in recent years, with workers across various industries and locations participating in strikes, walkouts, and other forms of protests.

Tatas bet big on own mineral water brands as Bisleri acquisition plan dropped

0
bisleri

Tata Consumer Products is a part of the Tata Group conglomerate and has a presence in multiple sectors, including food and beverage, personal care, and home care. The company entered the FMCG space in 2019 after Tata Global Beverages merged with consumer goods company Tata Chemicals. The merger aimed to create a larger consumer goods entity with a diversified product portfolio, stronger distribution network, and increased scale.

The decision to abandon the Bisleri acquisition plans and focus on their own mineral water brands, such as Tata Copper+ and Himalayan, could be a strategic move for Tata Consumer Products. With the growing demand for healthier beverage options, particularly mineral water, the company could leverage its existing brands to capture a larger share of the market. By investing heavily in their own mineral water brands, Tata Consumer Products could increase brand awareness, improve product quality and expand their distribution reach.

Sunil D’Souza, CEO and Managing Director of Tata Consumer Products, said, “Acquiring Bisleri would have fast-forwarded our plans by three years, but this plan was just a small puzzle in our big F&B (food and beverages) puzzle box. We will now back our own brands Tata Copper+, Tata Gluco+ and Himalayan mineral water with the strong resources we have at our disposal.”

“Bisleri is a fantastic brand and would have changed the growth trajectory for Tata Consumer, but now that plan is done and dusted.”

“We had put on hold some investment decisions in our RTD (ready to drink) business. However, we have expanded our manufacturing and distribution footprint to 70% of the market and will now focus on expanding to the rest.”

“We have significantly increased distribution to reach 3.6 million and raised spends on brands while parallelly ramping up innovation,” D’Souza said. “Our new product launches now are approximately 2.5 times compared to 2020, with dedicated R&D centres in Mumbai, Bengaluru and Sri City. Another major ramp-up in digital capabilities will happen soon.”

However, the FMCG market in India is highly competitive, with well-established players such as Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL), Britannia, and ITC dominating the industry. Tata Consumer Products will have to innovate and differentiate its products to capture consumer attention and market share. With an ambitious mandate to expand its product portfolio and distribution quickly, Tata Consumer Products will have to focus on innovation, customer engagement, and building strong brand equity to succeed in this competitive market.
