Eating Almonds Daily helps fight Diabetes Risks, Reveals a New Study

0

The study led by Viswanathan Mohan and published in the Journal of Nutrition is significant in the field of nutrition and health because it sheds light on the potential benefits of adding almonds to one’s diet. The study was conducted on Asian Indian adults with overweight and obesity living in Chennai City, India, where both excess body weight and diabetes are major health concerns.

The study found that consuming 43 g (1.5 ounces) of raw almonds daily for 12 weeks can reduce insulin resistance, improve pancreatic function, and help control blood glucose levels. These findings are important because insulin resistance is a key factor in the development of type 2 diabetes, and controlling blood glucose levels is critical in managing the disease.

Moreover, the almond treatment group in the study achieved significant reductions in body weight, BMI, and waist circumference over the intervention period, suggesting that adding almonds to one’s diet can help with weight management. Additionally, participants in the almond intervention group had better levels of total cholesterol and triglycerides, which are important markers for managing obesity and diabetes.

Dr Mohan, said “Our almond consumers had improvements to both body weight and blood sugar,” and added “Obesity is a health problem seen around the world, and we know obesity raises the risk of chronic diseases, like type 2 diabetes. We also know this is a complex problem, tightly interwoven with diabetes, and we think we’ve identified a rather simple solution. It turns out, asking people to enjoy almonds instead of other snacks can help them manage weight and reduce the burden of diabetes.”

Gayathri Rajagopal, PhD scholar, University of Madras, first author on the study’s paper said . “Our almond eaters demonstrated enhanced function of their beta cells, which are the cells in the pancreas that make insulin. This is substantial for people with prediabetes and suggests the potential for regular almond consumption to delay onset of diabetes. Besides that, we know almonds increase satiety making them a healthy snack for people predisposed to type 2 diabetes.”

Furthermore, the study found that consuming almonds led to better glycemic responses, which is important for managing blood glucose levels. The almond intervention group also consumed fewer carbohydrates and increased their intake of protein, monounsaturated fat, and dietary fiber. These changes in dietary intake could contribute to the improvements in health observed in the study.

The study employed a randomized controlled design, which adds to its credibility. However, it is important to note that the findings may only generalize to Asian Indian adults with overweight and obesity. Nonetheless, the study’s results provide valuable insights into the potential benefits of adding almonds to one’s diet, especially for those struggling with excess body weight and diabetes.

In conclusion, almonds are a nutrient-rich snack that can offer numerous health benefits, including managing diabetes, promoting heart health, and aiding in weight management. With the prevalence of obesity and diabetes increasing around the world, the findings of this study suggest that adding almonds to one’s diet could make a profound difference in improving health.

5 Red Flags to Consider before choosing a Restaurant

0
Restaurant Dining

Choosing a restaurant or cafe  can be a tricky process, some would say it is rather difficult than finding the actual date and time of convenience. You want to make sure the location and atmosphere are just right, so you can focus on getting to know your date without any distractions. However, there are several red flags that you should look out for when selecting a restaurant or cafe for a date.

Here are five of red flags you should avoid:

Bad Online Reviews

Before you book a table at a restaurant or cafe, take a look at their online reviews. A few bad reviews are to be expected, but if there are a lot of negative comments about the food, service, or atmosphere, it might be a sign that you should look elsewhere. Keep in mind that some people can be overly critical or may have had a bad experience that doesn’t reflect the norm, but if you see multiple negative reviews, it’s a good idea to proceed with caution.

Poor Hygiene Standards

Hygiene is an important factor when it comes to choosing a restaurant or cafe for a date. Take a look around the restaurant or cafe and observe if the establishment is clean and well-maintained. If the floors, tables, or restrooms are dirty, it’s a clear red flag. Poor hygiene standards can be a sign of larger problems in the kitchen or with the staff, which can lead to food poisoning or other health issues.

Limited or Unappetizing Menu Options

One of the most important aspects of a restaurant or cafe is the food. If the menu is limited or unappetizing, it can be a red flag that the establishment isn’t worth your time or money. Make sure to check out the menu beforehand to ensure that there are enough options that you and your date will enjoy. If the menu doesn’t appeal to you, it’s best to look for another restaurant or cafe that will.

Overcrowded or Noisy Environment

The environment of a restaurant or cafe can have a significant impact on your date. An overcrowded or noisy environment can be distracting and make it difficult to have a conversation. If you’re looking for a more intimate atmosphere, make sure to choose a restaurant or cafe that isn’t too crowded. Also, consider the noise level – if the music is too loud, it can be difficult to hear each other speak.

Poor Service

Finally, poor service can ruin a date. If the staff is inattentive, unfriendly, or unprofessional, it can be a major turn-off. You want to make sure that you and your date are treated well by the staff, so you can relax and enjoy your meal. If you notice that the service is poor, it’s best to look for another restaurant or cafe that values its customers.

These are just a few red flags to look out for when choosing a restaurant or cafe for a date. By paying attention to these warning signs, you can avoid a potentially awkward or uncomfortable situation and have a more enjoyable experience. Remember to take your time when selecting a location and don’t be afraid to trust your instincts. With a little bit of research and careful consideration, you can find the perfect restaurant or cafe for your next date.

5 Creative Ways to use Parchment Paper in your Kitchen

0

Parchment paper is a versatile kitchen essential that can be used for much more than just lining baking sheets. This unassuming, plain piece of paper can help make your cooking and baking endeavors more enjoyable, efficient, and even beautiful. Here are five creative ways to use and re-use parchment paper in your kitchen

En papillote cooking

En papillote, which means “in parchment,” is a classic French cooking technique that involves cooking food inside a parchment paper packet. This method is perfect for cooking fish, chicken, and vegetables because it allows the food to steam in its own juices, creating a moist and flavorful dish.

To make an en papillote packet, simply place your ingredients in the center of a large piece of parchment paper, fold the paper over the ingredients, and crimp the edges to seal the packet. Bake the packet in the oven for the required amount of time, and then carefully open the packet to reveal your deliciously steamed dish.

Homemade piping bags

If you don’t have a piping bag on hand but need to pipe frosting, whipped cream, or other soft ingredients, you can easily make your own piping bag using parchment paper.

Start by cutting a square of parchment paper and folding it diagonally to create a triangle. Then, fold the triangle in half to create a smaller triangle, and then fold the top point of the triangle down towards the center, creating a cone shape. Finally, roll the cone towards the bottom point, creating a small opening at the top. Fill the cone with your desired filling and snip the tip off the bottom to start piping.

Rolling out dough

Rolling out dough can be a messy and frustrating task, but using parchment paper can make it much easier. Start by placing a sheet of parchment paper on your work surface and dusting it lightly with flour. Place your dough on top of the parchment paper and then place another sheet of parchment paper on top of the dough. Use a rolling pin to roll out the dough between the two sheets of parchment paper, peeling off the top sheet when you’re done. This method helps prevent the dough from sticking to your work surface or rolling pin, and it also makes it easy to transfer the dough to a baking sheet.

Grilling or roasting vegetables

Grilling or roasting vegetables on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet is an easy way to ensure that they cook evenly and don’t stick to the pan. Start by cutting your vegetables into bite-sized pieces and then tossing them with your desired seasonings and a bit of oil. Place the vegetables on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet and roast them in the oven or grill them over medium-high heat until they’re tender and slightly browned. The parchment paper helps prevent the vegetables from sticking to the pan and makes clean-up a breeze.

Baking decorative pie crusts

If you want to make a beautiful pie with a decorative crust, parchment paper can be a helpful tool. Start by rolling out your pie crust dough and then using a sharp knife or cookie cutter to cut out your desired shapes. Place the shapes on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet and freeze them for 10-15 minutes until they’re firm. Once they’re firm, arrange the shapes on top of your pie filling and bake as usual. The parchment paper helps prevent the crust shapes from sticking to the baking sheet and makes it easy to transfer them to the top of your pie.

Parchment paper is an incredibly versatile tool in the kitchen. There are countless creative ways to use parchment paper to make your cooking and baking endeavors more enjoyable, efficient, and beautiful.

Feeding India partners Maharashtra Govt & UdyogYantra to Pilot Meal Nutrition program at a Tribal School

Zomato, the popular online food ordering and delivery platform, has partnered with the Government of Maharashtra and UdyogYantra, a technology startup, to pilot a project aimed at ensuring the nutritional quality and compliance of meals served to children at Todsa, a Government Ashram School for tribal children in Maharashtra.

The pilot project involves the use of an AI-enabled device that is specifically designed to monitor the nutritional value of the meals provided to the children, as well as ensure compliance with the prescribed nutritional standards. This device is expected to help the school administration in maintaining a healthy and balanced diet for the children, thus contributing to their overall well-being.

Shubham Gupta, IAS, said, “The District Administration is initiating a new collaborative effort in nutrition management, using the latest technological innovation in Artificial Intelligence. Feeding India by Zomato and UdyogYantra have been instrumental in this novel pilot project by pledging their support to work in the aspirational district of Gadchiroli. We express our utmost gratitude to them for their contribution and good work. Such initiatives have the potential to be game changers in this rapidly transforming social sector of the Country.”

Vishal Kumar, CEO and president of Feeding India, added, “The result of this pilot has been very encouraging and both the district administration as well as children have echoed a stark improvement in the quantity and quality of daily meals being serviced. This device has aided in regular monitoring of BMI of children and proactive identification of acute malnutrition among children requiring special attention. Feeding India, upon the request of the District Administration has made available a malt-based nutritious supplement to quickly improve the nutrition level of these children. Together, we are making a real difference in the lives of the most vulnerable among us, and it’s a true honor to be a part of this meaningful work.”

Ankur Jain, Founder & CEO of UdyogYantra, said, “Management guru Peter Drucker once said, [only] what gets measured, gets managed. Quality-Quantity & Contents of Food served in schools directly control the nutrition our children need to grow into healthy growth pillars of the country. It is heartening to see the disruptive approach from Zomato Feeding India and dynamic leadership of District Administration, to introduce Deep Tech from UdyogYantra to measure and monitor in real-time Nutrition Delivery and Child Impact Traceability is one the remotest corners of the country. We believe Tech and a Belief in Tech can accelerate a move towards a healthy India,”

Todsa is located in the remote village of Etapalli in the Gadchiroli district of Maharashtra, which is known for its predominantly indigenous population. The implementation of this pilot project in such a region is particularly significant as it aims to provide improved access to nutritious meals to children who may have limited access to a balanced diet otherwise.

The successful implementation of this pilot project could lead to the adoption of similar technologies and initiatives in other regions of the state and the country. The project has been carried out with the support and guidance of Shubham Gupta, IAS, who has played a crucial role in ensuring the success of the initiative.

5 Foods that help you fight your Painful Period Cramps

0

Did you know period cramps have a weird scientific name i.e dysmenorrhea. That’s right, the devil of your dreams that knocks on your door every month and has such a demonic name. As its scientific name suggests period cramps can cause a range of uncomfortable symptoms for individuals who menstruate.

One common symptom is a sensation of grilling or pain in the lower abdomen or back. This pain is caused by contractions of the uterus as it sheds its lining and can range from mild discomfort to severe pain that interferes with daily activities.

In addition to physical discomfort, period cramps can also cause emotional distress, as individuals may feel frustrated, irritable, or fatigued due to the pain. Fortunately, there is a range of food items that can help manage period cramps naturally, without those damaging heat therapies and tiring exercises.

Here are five foods that can help with period pain:

Ginger

Ginger is a natural anti-inflammatory agent and a popular remedy for period pain. It contains compounds called gingerols and shogaols that can help reduce inflammation and pain in the body. Ginger tea is an effective way to consume ginger during your menstrual cycle, but it can also be added to smoothies, soups, and stir-fries.

Dark Chocolate

Dark chocolate is not only delicious, but it also contains magnesium, a mineral that can help relax muscles and reduce menstrual cramps. It also contains antioxidants that can help reduce inflammation in the body. Dark chocolate with a minimum of 70% cocoa content is recommended to get the most benefits.

Leafy Greens

Leafy greens such as spinach, kale, and broccoli are rich in vitamins and minerals that can help reduce inflammation and relieve period pain. They are also rich in iron, which can help prevent anemia caused by heavy menstrual bleeding. Adding leafy greens to your diet can also help improve overall health.

Fatty Fish

Fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel, and sardines are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which can help reduce inflammation in the body. Omega-3 fatty acids can also help reduce the severity of menstrual cramps. Adding fatty fish to your diet at least twice a week can provide the necessary omega-3 fatty acids needed for relief.

Turmeric

Turmeric is a spice that contains curcumin, a compound that has anti-inflammatory properties. It has been used in traditional medicine for centuries to relieve pain and inflammation. Turmeric can be added to meals such as curries, soups, and rice dishes, or consumed in the form of turmeric tea.

Incorporating these foods into your diet can help alleviate period pain and improve overall health. However, it is important to note that while these foods can provide relief, they may not work for everyone. If you experience severe or persistent period pain, it is always best to consult a healthcare provider for advice on treatment options.

Funding Winter hits D2C Meat Startup Fipola; Startup shuts down Operations

0
fipola

Online D2C and retail meat brand Fipola has shut operations as the brand failed to raise capital due to the unfavourable market conditions. As of December 2021, it had 48 stores across Chennai, Coimbatore, Hyderabad, Vellore, Puducherry and Bengaluru.

It has plans of expansion with INR 40 Cr infusion, as announced in 2022 with Actress Nayanthara as Brand Ambassador.

Fipola’s closure is a blow to the Indian startup ecosystem, which has seen a difficult funding environment in recent times. Several startups across various sectors have struggled to secure investments, leading to many of them shutting down or downsizing their operations.

Fipola’s demise is notable since it was a promising player in the D2C meat delivery segment, which has seen significant growth in recent years. The company’s plans to expand to 250 stores by the end of 2023 showcased its ambitious goals, but the inability to raise funds and the unfavorable market conditions proved too challenging.

The startup’s founder said, “We are not able to raise the required funds due to the bad market. We have moved to liquidate the assets of the company. As already informed, we are an asset-rich company and not a tech startup. We have informed everyone and our channel partners, vendors etc. that the liquidation process has begun and that everyone shall be settled by April.”

The legal notice from operational creditors and the non-payment of salaries to employees highlights the challenges faced by the company in its final days. The closure also leaves many customers and employees in a lurch, with the former unable to access the app and the latter unpaid for two months.

The closure of Fipola and other VC-funded startups is an indication of the funding winter that has gripped India’s startup ecosystem. Several factors have contributed to the funding crunch, including the COVID-19 pandemic’s impact, regulatory changes, and investor caution towards startups.

However, experts remain optimistic about the future of the Indian startup ecosystem, given its resilience and the government’s efforts to promote entrepreneurship. With continued support from investors and the government, the ecosystem is expected to bounce back, and promising startups like Fipola could rise again.

Blue Tea Bags INR 75 Lakhs from Aman Gupta on Shark Tank India

0

BlueTea was founded in 2018 with a mission to bring back ancient Indian Ayurveda-based flower teas to the world. Ayurveda is an ancient system of natural medicine that originated in India over 5000 years ago. It is based on the belief that a balanced mind, body, and spirit are essential for good health and well-being. BlueTea aims to promote these principles by providing teas that are both healthy and convenient for consumers.

The company’s focus on convenience is evident in the way they have packaged and marketed their products. BlueTea is available in easy-to-use sachets that can be brewed in just a few minutes, making it an ideal choice for busy people who want to enjoy a healthy cup of tea without any fuss. The sachets are also perfect for people who are on-the-go, as they can be easily carried in a bag or purse.

One of the unique selling points of BlueTea is that it contains 0 percent caffeine. This makes it an excellent alternative for people who are sensitive to caffeine or who want to avoid it altogether. Unlike green tea, which is made from tea leaves and contains caffeine, BlueTea is made from flowers that do not contain caffeine. This means that it is herbal in its truest form and has a unique taste that is quite different from traditional teas.

Sunil Saha, Co-founder, BlueTea said “It was an enriching experience to be on Shark Tank India. We feel extremely delighted to have had the opportunity to be funded by Shark – Aman Gupta. We envision a bright future for BlueTea where we aim to revolutionize tea-consumption habits worldwide. BlueTea is envisioned to bring back the lost thousand years of glory – the ancient ayurvedic flower teas to your doorstep,”

Nitesh Singh, Co-founder, BlueTea, said, “BlueTea is a tea brand which is providing convenience to the consumers as they enjoy flower teas; teas which are truly herbal in their essence. Shark Tank was a great opportunity for the brand and we will ensure to leverage the plethora of opportunities that it has opened for us. We are hopeful to make a 5X turnover in FY 2023 and there will be no stopping going forward.”

BlueTea aims to revolutionize the tea-consumption habits of people worldwide by promoting the health benefits of its herbal teas. The company hopes to establish itself as a specialty tea by creating a new category of herbal teas that are both healthy and delicious. BlueTea’s goal is to surpass the popularity of green tea, which is often associated with slimming but has a bitter taste and is known for its ineffective slimming results.

The company gained recognition by appearing on Shark Tank India, where it secured a INR 7.5 million investment from Shark Aman Gupta, Co-Founder-CMO of boAt. The brand faced criticism from Anupam Mittal, Founder, and CEO of Shaadi.com – People Group, but was ultimately able to secure a deal with Aman Gupta. The initial ask was for Rs 75 lakh for 1 percent equity, valuing the company at Rs 75 crore. Aman Gupta offered Rs 15 lakh for 5 percent equity and 60 lakhs debt at 12 percent interest. The pitchers countered with Rs 50 lakh for 2 percent equity and 25 lakhs debt at 12 percent interest. The brand was able to successfully finalize a deal with Aman at Rs 50 lakh for 3 percent equity and Rs 25 lakh debt at 12 percent interest.

BlueTea has expanded globally and currently supplies and distributes its teas to 12 countries, including the USA, UK, Canada, Germany, Australia, and France. In just three years, the company has experienced massive growth, with an initial turnover of Rs 25 lakh in 2018 and closing with a turnover of Rs 10 crore in FY 2022. The brand aims to achieve a turnover of Rs 25 crore this year, with the majority of its sales coming from the USA and India.
