2022 Will Be Called the Year of Crunch by Frito-Lay!

According to the most current U.S. Snack Index from Frito-Lay, Plano, Texas, 2022 will be the year of crunch. More than 70% of snackers would choose a dish with a crunch when thinking about their ideal snack, according to an index that surveyed consumers about their snacking preferences.

Other significant snack qualities identified by the Snack Index among consumers, in addition to crunch, included sweetness (66%), saltiness (61%), and fullness (53%). Nearly 50% of those polled said that when they were thinking of the ideal snack, it also brought back memories of a particular time and made them feel nostalgic (49%).

Denise Lefebvre, senior vice president of research and development for Frito-Lay and Quaker Foods North America, stated that examining all aspects of a snack—including the crunch factor—is very essential to the company. Because we are aware that everyone’s ideal snack is unique, we regularly solicit feedback from customers before involving our chefs and culinary centre to offer diversity, deliver on flavour, and discover new dishes that customers adore.

While age disparities and end-of-year snacking habits also contribute to trends to monitor, Frito-Lay believes that all adults will continue to opt for crunchy snacks in 2023.

In comparison to other generations, Gen Z is twice as likely to order snacks for delivery at night, and over 50% of Gen Z say that snacking is most satisfying after dark. 50 per cent of millennials claim to visit grocery or convenience stores to sate their late-night food desires.

According to the Snack Index, 61% of adults were unlikely to crave snacks if they felt depressed around the holidays, despite the fact that 65% of adults crave snacks the most when they want to reward themselves. Snacking is also a sensory experience, with 55% of respondents saying they are most in the mood for snacks when they smell them and 52% when they see them.

Americans are more inclined than other people to try a recipe that calls for Lay’s potato chips (46%), when it comes to snack cookery. Furthermore, they are more likely (40%) to try a recipe using Red Gold pretzels than Cheetos Original (37%).

A national sample of 2,212 persons was surveyed by Morning Consult between November 4 and November 7 for this survey. The interviews took place online, and the data were weighted depending on the gender, educational level, age, race, and geographic location of the target sample of individuals. The margin of error for the entire survey’s results is two percentage points, plus or minus.

It’s easy to say, “Take it lightly, friend,” but it’s tremendously difficult to do. PepsiCo India’s salty snack brand Kurkure has a new sub-brand to help you practice what you preach.

Kurkure Playz is Kurkure’s first venture into the soft-textured snack sector. This has historically been categorized as a puff, with flavours such as Masala Munch, Chilli Chatka, Green Chutney, and the six-month-old Chatpata Cheese.

Kurkure’s New Venture!

Kurkure Playz is expanding the mother brand’s presence in the pellet sector of the soft-textured snacks market with the already existing puffcorn flavour and the new Pasta, which is a creamy, herb, and onion flavour in a pasta-shaped bite.

“Pellets have grown more than puffed in the last several years,” says Neha Prasad, associate director and brand lead at Kurkure. She reminds everyone that Kurkure first arrived in India with extruded items. “That’s how the category was developed, and now that the light-textured snack has emerged, we have to play in this segment as well.”

The brand has already launched an advertisement to promote Kurkure Playz, and another is on the way. Unlike previous Brand advertisements, which explored chaotic, funny, and wink-wink cliches, this one opts for the horror-comedy genre.

The ad, created by Leo Burnett, which got the creative mandate for PepsiCo India in 2022, portrays a person who, despite seeing a ghost in the room he’s about to move into, can keep his cool after taking a mouthful of puffcorn with his quivering hands.

What comes next? He is able to soothe the tense mood by negotiating a rent-sharing deal with the ghost.

“Halke Mein Lo,” says the advertisement.

“Today’s generation doesn’t take things too seriously, and this is the fact we can claim,” says Vikram (Spiky) Pandey, Leo Burnett’s national creative director. He claims that the team opted to move forward with this mindset and the aspect of the sub-brand being a light snack.

“Halke Mein Lo” is a colloquial phrase that travels well, according to Pandey. “When people use it in casual conversation, it tends to remind them of your product or communication.” That’s where the line originated.

According to Pandey, if someone dismisses something as weird as meeting a ghost in your room, “it’s a story worth watching and telling everyone else.”

According to Prasad, the two Kurkure Playz products have the most distinct flavours in the category. “The concept was written, tested with consumers, and different proposals were required.” This is how we came up with this concept. “

Last year, Kurkure introduced Chatpata Cheese. Instead of embarking on the time-consuming job of developing a new sub-brand, the company could have done the same with Pastax.

According to Prasad, the cohort, placement, and competitive landscape of this light-textured snack are unique. “It’s critical that we (Kurkure) establish a portfolio, so we must keep it all together under a sub-brand.”

When asked about the possibility of cannibalizing existing Kurkure flavours and snacks from the PepsiCo family, Prasad admits that it is possible, but she believes that the new soft texture snacks under Kurkure Playz will provide “greater business potential.”

Kurkure Playz will primarily target a young demographic. While Prasad knows this customer segment isn’t on TV, the medium, she adds, “is still the most effective way of getting out to the masses.” As a result, it will be included in the mix, along with digital, social, and on-the-ground activations.

The brand has already appeared on “The Kapil Sharma Show” and “Indian Idol” and is available through key retail and online platforms.

Knit Report: Gen Z prefers sweet snacks, whereas Millennials prefer salty ones

According to the Gen Z vs. Millennials Youth Snacking Trends Report by Knit, an Austin, Texas-based research firm, consumers chose snacks based on flavours, ingredients, packaging, and other factors.

According to Knit, millennials were born between 1981 and 1996. Anyone born after 1997 is considered to be a part of the world’s first ethnically and technologically diverse generation. The research firm also categorizes Gen Z as addicted to their screens, idealistic about the environment and social issues, and with an estimated $150 billion in combined purchasing power (and counting).

Snacking Patterns

76.2% of those who responded to the study indicated they snack two to three times per day. In comparison to Gen Z’s 7.1%, millennials are more likely to snack frequently (18.2% vs. 7.1%). However, a portion of Gen Zers (27.9% vs. 19.9% of millennials) are more likely to limit their snacking to only one snack per day.

Favourite Snacks

According to the report, millennials prefer salty snacks while Gen Z prefers sweets. Compared to millennials, Gen Z has also shown a little higher liking for savoury and spicy food, at 57.1% and 47.9%, respectively.

Chips were the most popular category-specific snack choice for both age groups. The following most popular categories for Generation Z were cookies, chocolates, and then gummies. The following two most popular categories among millennials were crackers and snack mixtures.

Snacking was most common for Gen Z and millennials during passive activities like watching television and when they were bored at home. More than 56% of millennials and 50% of Gen Z watch television while snacking.

Assorted snacks that Gen Z prefers depend on the situation:

  • Getting together with friends: gum
  • Gummies, chips, and cookies while watching TV
  • Fruit and protein bars after working out

Ingredients

According to Knit, the popularity of gluten-free and plant-based diets has caused parents and younger customers to pay more attention to the labels of the products they eat.

When it comes to choosing which snack to consume, Gen Z and millennials appear to be most influenced by the ingredients, while calorie and macro counts are not far behind.

Brands

Pricing is the primary element that influences both millennials and members of Generation Z to try a new snack. According to Knit, they want to be sure that the risky purchases leave room for their mainstays before spending a chunk of their weekly snacking budget.

Following price, brand recognition exerts a strong influence on Gen Z consumers’ decisions to try new snacks, with 52.4% placing the brand first or second, compared to 48.4% of millennials.

Purchasing Snacks

Although seeing something new in an aisle remains the top way to discover new products for both Gen Z and millennials (46.2% and 58.2%, respectively), Gen Z’s price sensitivity continues to be a factor. In-store coupons are more likely to persuade Gen Zers (12.8% vs. 5.5%) to try new snacks than they are to persuade millennials.

Gen Z is more influenced by in-store advertisements than millennials, who test new products at a rate of 7.7% vs. 3.6%.

Cannabis-containing snack, Piranha Power Pack Nuts removed from Singapore vending machines; CNB is looking into it

The Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) announced in a statement on Friday that a snack was placed on sale in Singapore vending machines and advertised as having a type of cannabis.

The Piranha Power Pack Nuts product, which CNB suspects may contain hemp seed flour made from the Cannabis Sativa plant, has been ordered by the importer to be taken off the market.

“The hemp plant’s scientific name is Cannabis sativa. In other words, hemp is marijuana, according to CNB.

Manufacturers frequently use the name “hemp” to describe a plant type that contains very little tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), a psychoactive compound that is unlikely to have any euphoric effects.

Nevertheless, the Misuse of Drugs Act’s first schedule lists cannabis and its derivatives as Class “A” restricted substances.

Despite what the product labels may say, any items made from the Cannabis sativa plant or its seeds may include prohibited drugs like THC, according to the CNB, which also noted that there are negative health effects associated with THC consumption.

An Australian-owned company that makes the snack claims on its website that each package of Piranha Power Pack Nuts contains 2% hemp seed flour.

The importer’s name and the location of the vending machines housing these products were not disclosed by CNB.

The CNB reported that investigations are still ongoing.

According to CNB, it is illegal to import, export, possess, sell, or consume any restricted substances or items that contain them, even in trace amounts.

It advised consumers not to eat the Piranha Power Pack Nuts snack and to throw them away instead.

If they come across additional food products or substances that they believe may contain restricted narcotics, members of the public can call CNB at 1800 325 6666 for information and assistance, or they can submit a report online at www.eservices.cnb.gov.sg/feedback.

Avoid eating these two snacks: FDA are recalling them due to hidden allergies

Two snack products have recently been recalled by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) because they might contain substances that weren’t listed on the package and could cause an allergic reaction that could be fatal.

The items include Organic Granola from Garden of Light and a Tohato Nagewa snack from Daiso California LLC.

NAGEWA SNACK 

The FDA has ordered Daiso California LLC to recall Tohato Nagewa Snack due to the presence of an undeclared milk derivative ingredient. Consuming these goods might cause a serious or even fatal allergic reaction in people who have a milk allergy or sensitivity.

Daiso stores in New York, New Jersey, California, Washington, Nevada, Texas, and Arizona sold the goods. They come in a red bag with a picture of the potato ring nibbles that are crispy on them. The product is offered in containers of 27 and 73 grams.

No incidences of allergic reactions to this product have been documented.

The product was delivered in packaging that did not properly alert consumers to the possibility of a milk allergen, leading to the recall. A further examination revealed that the issue was brought on by a brief malfunction in the company’s production and packaging procedures.

The product’s sales have been put on hold.

Due to potential contamination with tree nuts (almonds), Garden of Light is recalling one lot of its organic oat and honey granola. According to the FDA, individuals who are allergic to almonds or have a significant sensitivity to them run the risk of having a serious or life-threatening allergic response if they ingest this product.

The “Naturally Better” Organic Oats & Honey Granola with UPC code 07880201130 is sold at SEG stores by Topco/Full Circle under the brand name “Organically Better.”

The “Best Before Date” (BBD) of the product is 10/10/23. On the back of the film packaging, you’ll see the UPC code and best-before date. Additionally, this recall does not affect any other lot numbers or items.

More than 14,300 pounds of merchandise were produced by the company and distributed across the nation. The product potentially containing almonds was distributed in packaging that concealed their existence, leading to the discovery that the recall was necessary.

Up to this point, no illnesses or injuries have been reported.
