Bisleri: The pioneer of packaged drinking water in India and the inspiring story behind the brand’s success

bisleri

Bisleri is an iconic bottled water brand in India, known for its purity, quality, and availability across the country. The brand has a unique story behind its creation and growth, which reflects the changing consumer preferences and business opportunities in the Indian market.

The Beginning of Bisleri:

Bisleri was founded by an Italian businessman named Felice Bisleri, who came to India in the early 1900s. He started a company that produced soda water and later expanded into other beverages such as lemonade, orangeade, and mango juice. However, the real turning point for the company came in the 1960s when Bisleri introduced packaged drinking water in India.

At that time, tap water in India was not considered safe to drink due to the lack of proper filtration and purification systems. This created a demand for bottled water among consumers who wanted a reliable and convenient source of safe drinking water. Bisleri seized this opportunity and launched its packaged drinking water brand, which soon became a household name in India.

Challenges Faced by Bisleri:

Bisleri’s success was not immediate, however. In the early years, the company faced challenges in convincing consumers to pay for something that they could get for free from their taps. To address this, Bisleri started a marketing campaign to educate people about the benefits of drinking safe and pure water, and the need to invest in their health and well-being.

One of the key challenges Bisleri faced was the lack of regulations governing the bottled water industry in India. In the absence of clear standards, many unscrupulous players entered the market, selling substandard water in fake Bisleri bottles. This led to a decline in the brand’s reputation and trust among consumers.

To overcome this challenge, Bisleri focused on building a strong brand image and quality assurance system. The company invested in state-of-the-art purification and bottling facilities and introduced tamper-proof packaging to prevent counterfeiting. Bisleri also worked with government agencies to establish industry standards and regulations and was one of the founding members of the Indian Bottled Water Association.

Bisleri’s Innovative Marketing Strategies:

Over time, Bisleri’s efforts paid off, and the brand became synonymous with safe and pure drinking water in India. The company continued to innovate and expand its product line, introducing new packaging formats and flavors to cater to different consumer preferences.

Bisleri also adopted innovative marketing strategies to engage with consumers and build brand loyalty. One such strategy was the “Bisleri Paani ki Bottle” campaign, which encouraged consumers to reuse Bisleri bottles for other purposes such as storing oil or spices, thereby reducing plastic waste.

Bisleri also leveraged the power of celebrity endorsements to promote its brand. In 2000, the company signed a deal with Bollywood actor and fitness enthusiast Akshay Kumar to endorse its brand, highlighting the health benefits of drinking pure water. This helped Bisleri connect with a wider audience and build a strong brand image as a health and wellness company.

The Rise of Packaged Drinking Water Industry in India

The rise of Bisleri and other packaged drinking water brands in India reflects the changing consumer preferences and the growing concern for health and hygiene. With the increasing urbanization and pollution, access to safe drinking water has become a critical issue in India, and packaged drinking water has emerged as a viable solution.

Today, the packaged drinking water industry in India is worth over $2 billion and is expected to continue growing in the coming years. Bisleri remains the leading brand in the market, with a market share of over 40%. Other major players in the market include Kinley, Aqua, Bailey, and Himalayan.

Bisleri’s success story is a testament to the power of identifying a market opportunity, investing in quality and innovation, and building a strong brand image. The company’s journey also highlights the importance of overcoming challenges and adapting to changing consumer preferences and regulatory environments.

As the packaged drinking water industry in India continues to evolve, Bisleri and other brands will need to continue innovating and differentiating themselves to stay ahead in the competitive market. However, with a strong brand heritage and commitment to quality and sustainability, Bisleri is well-positioned to continue leading the market for years to come.

Top 5 red flags to watch out for while visiting street food vendors

0
street food

As you step out onto the busy Indian streets, your senses are immediately engulfed by a delightful array of sights, sounds, and smells. Street food stalls are dotted along the pavements, each one offering a tantalizing glimpse of India’s rich culinary heritage.

Each region has its own delicious representation in form of food, and street food in particular is a budget-friendly way to glimpse into a particular culture as food is the main parameter of cultural representation. For example: Vada in vada pav represents how Mumbaikers are soft and warm but if you try to crush them the result might be very hot and spicy just like the chilli and hot batata vada inside the vada pav 😉

Indian streets have it all- from pav bhaji to pani-puri, from chivda to samosa, from jalebi to momos, you just name it, as each street has an aroma and story of its own.

While street food might be the first preference for foodies due to it tendency of being extremely delicious and budget friendly, but the main disadvantage when it comes to street food is hygiene as many incidents have suggested how a random pani-puri waala mixes his pee in the pani-puri to make it tastier and how people hog on it, only to get typhoid later. This is just one of such famous incident as there are many health hazards and diseases that follow after consuming street-food.  It’s important to take necessary precautions to avoid foodborne illnesses when it comes to street food, so here are the top 5 red flags to watch out for while visiting street food vendors:

  1. Dirty or Unsanitary Conditions:

If the food vendor’s cooking area or utensils look dirty or unsanitary, it’s a red flag that the food may not be safe to eat. Look for signs of proper hygiene, such as hand washing stations, clean cooking surfaces, and gloves worn by the vendor.

  1. Unrefrigerated or Uncovered Food:

Food that is left out in the open air or without proper refrigeration can quickly become contaminated with bacteria and cause food poisoning. Look for food that is covered or stored in a refrigerated unit to ensure that it’s safe to eat.

  1. Low Turnover of Food:

If the vendor has a low turnover of food, it’s a red flag that the food may not be fresh. Freshly cooked food is less likely to cause food poisoning, so look for vendors that have a high turnover of food to ensure that you’re getting fresh, safe-to-eat food.

  1. Lack of Price Transparency:

If the vendor doesn’t display prices or if they seem to be charging more than other vendors in the area, it’s a red flag that they may be trying to overcharge you. Make sure that you know the average prices for street food in the area before making a purchase to avoid getting ripped off.

  1. Unlicensed Vendors:

Unlicensed street vendors may not be subject to the same health and safety regulations as licensed vendors, making them a higher risk for foodborne illnesses. Look for vendors with proper licenses and permits to ensure that you’re eating from a safe and regulated source.

By looking out for these red flags and taking the necessary safety measures, you can enjoy the flavors of your favorite street foods  without putting your health at risk.

Breaking Barriers: Women to run 25% of retail liquor business in Uttar Pradesh starting April 1st

0

In recent years, there has been a noticeable increase in women’s participation in the liquor industry in Uttar Pradesh. The state government has taken steps to promote women’s entrepreneurship and increase their representation in various sectors, including the liquor business. As of April 1st, 2023, women will control 25% of the retail liquor business in the state, which is a significant milestone.

According to data maintained by the excise department headquarters in Prayagraj, out of the total 28,930 retail liquor shops that have been floated by the department for the 2023-24 fiscal year across the state, 7,216 have been bagged by women. This marks the highest level of female participation in the industry so far. The highest participation rates have been observed in Lucknow, Prayagraj, and Kanpur districts. The increasing participation of women in the liquor business is a positive step towards gender equality and women’s empowerment.

A senior excise department officer, said,“Onwards 2019-2020, we have been observing steady growth in the number of women retailers. The onus of running the shops in a free and fair manner lies on the owner and in case anomalies are detected, the woman licensee is going to be held responsible.”

In addition to women, the liquor industry has also seen the entry of transgenders for the first time in Firozabad district. One transgender applicant has secured two retail liquor shops – one beer shop and one liquor shop. This is a significant step towards promoting inclusivity and diversity in the industry.

Industry experts attribute the rise of women’s participation in the liquor business to the changes in business rules that were implemented in 2018. The rules were changed to minimize the influence of local strongmen on the industry and encourage new entrants with no prior experience. The most significant change was the condition that restricted an individual to owning only two shops in a district, which opened up opportunities for new players. This move is credited with breaking the monopoly and cartels that previously dominated the liquor business in the state for over a decade.

To further tighten the rules, the UP government stated in the following year that an individual would be allowed to own only two retail liquor shops in the entire state. This measure was aimed at preventing some individuals from owning dozens of liquor shops by participating in online lotteries held in various districts. The government’s efforts to regulate the industry and promote gender diversity are commendable and are likely to have a positive impact on the industry in the long run.

Taste the difference: Why citrus is the key to a better beer

0
Affordable Beers

When it comes to beer, people have different preferences for different flavors, textures, and aromas. Some prefer the bitter taste of an IPA, while others prefer the milder taste of a wheat beer. However, there is one thing that most people can agree on – beer tastes better with a slice of citrus. Adding a slice of lime or lemon to a cold beer can make it taste more refreshing and crisp. But why is this the case?

History of Citrus in Beer:

The tradition of adding citrus to beer dates back centuries. Historians believe that the practice originated in Belgium in the 16th century. At the time, beer was often brewed with fruit, and citrus was a popular choice because it was readily available in the region. Citrus was also used as a way to mask the flavor of stale or spoiled beer.

In the 19th century, the practice of adding citrus to beer spread to other parts of Europe, including Germany and England. During this time, beer was typically served at room temperature, and adding a slice of lemon or lime was a way to make it more palatable.

In the United States, the tradition of adding citrus to beer became popular in the 20th century. In the 1920s and 1930s, the country was in the midst of Prohibition, and many people turned to illegal speakeasies to drink. Bartenders would often add citrus to their beer to make it taste better and mask the taste of inferior-quality alcohol.

Today, adding citrus to beer is a common practice around the world. It is especially popular in warm climates, where people are looking for a refreshing drink to cool down on a hot day.

Why Does Citrus Improve the Taste of Beer?

There are several reasons why mixing citrus with beer makes it taste better:

  1. Citrus Balances Bitterness: The primary reason why people add citrus to beer is to balance out the bitterness. Beer is made from hops, which give it a bitter flavor. While some people enjoy this taste, others find it too overpowering. Citrus contains citric acid, which helps to balance out the bitterness and create a more pleasant flavor profile.
  2. Citrus Adds Aroma: Another reason why people add citrus to beer is for the aroma. When you add a slice of lemon or lime to a beer, the oils from the citrus peel are released into the air. This creates a pleasant aroma that enhances the overall drinking experience.
  3. Citrus Adds Freshness: Adding citrus to beer can also make it taste fresher. The acidity in citrus fruits can help to cut through the heaviness of the beer and create a more refreshing taste. This is why citrus is often added to lighter beers, such as pilsners and wheat beers.
  4. Citrus Enhances Flavor: Finally, citrus can enhance the flavor of beer. The tartness of the citrus can bring out the flavors in the beer and make them more pronounced. This is particularly true for beers with fruity or floral notes, such as IPAs and saisons.

What Citrus Fruits Can You Add to Beer?

When it comes to adding citrus to beer, there are several fruits to choose from. Here are the most popular options:

  1. Lemon: Lemon is perhaps the most popular citrus fruit to add to beer. It has a tart and refreshing flavor that compliments the bitterness of beer. Lemon is particularly well-suited for lighter beers, such as pilsners and lagers.
  2. Lime: Lime is another popular citrus fruit to add to beer. It has a slightly sweeter flavor than lemon and can add a tropical twist to the beer. Lime is often added to Mexican-style lagers, such as Corona or Pacifico.
  3. Orange: Orange is a less common citrus fruit to add to beer, but it can work well with certain styles. It has a sweet and slightly bitter flavor that can complement the flavors of a Belgian witbier or a wheat beer.
  4. Grapefruit: Grapefruit is a popular addition to IPAs and other hop-forward beers. It has a bitter and slightly tart flavor that can enhance the bitterness of the hops and bring out their fruity or floral notes.

How to Add Citrus to Beer:

Adding citrus to beer is a simple process. Here are the steps to follow:

  • Choose your citrus fruit: Decide which citrus fruit you want to add to your beer. Consider the flavor profile of the beer and choose a citrus fruit that will complement it.
  • Cut the fruit: Slice the citrus fruit into thin rounds or wedges. Be sure to remove any seeds.
  • Squeeze the fruit: Squeeze the citrus fruit over the beer to release the oils from the peel.
  • Drop the fruit: Drop the fruit into the beer and give it a gentle stir.
  • Enjoy: Sit back, relax, and enjoy your citrus-infused beer!

Tips for Adding Citrus to Beer:

Here are some additional tips to keep in mind when adding citrus to beer:

  • Use fresh fruit: Always use fresh citrus fruit when adding it to beer. Bottled citrus juice can be too sweet and can overpower the flavor of the beer.
  • Don’t overdo it: Adding too much citrus to beer can overwhelm the flavor and make it taste unbalanced. Start with a small amount and adjust to your taste.
  • Choose the right beer: Not all beers are well-suited for citrus. Beers with strong malt flavors, such as stouts and porters, may not work well with citrus. Stick to lighter beers, such as pilsners, lagers, and wheat beers.
  • Experiment: Don’t be afraid to experiment with different citrus fruits and beer styles. You may discover a new flavor combination that you love!

Adding citrus to beer is a time-honored tradition that can enhance the flavor, aroma, and overall drinking experience. Citrus balances out the bitterness of beer, adds freshness and aroma, and enhances the flavor. Lemon, lime, orange, and grapefruit are the most popular citrus fruits to add to beer, and the process is simple and easy. Remember to use fresh fruit, start with a small amount, and choose the right beer for your citrus addition. Whether you’re sipping a cold beer on a hot summer day or enjoying a night out with friends, adding citrus to your beer can take your drinking experience to the next level.

Pani Puri in minutes: Viral video proves microwave cooking is the way to go!

0
pani puri

Pani puri is a popular Indian street food that consists of crispy, hollow puri shells filled with spiced mashed potatoes, chickpeas, chutneys, and a tangy, spicy water called pani. It is a favorite among people of all ages and is a go-to snack for many Indians. Traditionally, Pani puri discs are deep-fried in oil and then filled with a mixture of spicy water, boiled potatoes, chickpeas, and other ingredients.

But what many people don’t know is that Pani puri can also be cooked using a microwave.

Recently, a blogger shared a quick and easy hack on how to make Pani puri in a microwave, making it convenient for people to enjoy their favorite snack in the comfort of their own homes. The method involves spreading out ten Pani puri discs at a time on a microwaveable plate, without overlapping them, and then setting the microwave on high for approximately 35-40 seconds. This simple technique involves heating the discs in the microwave, rather than frying them in oil, and then filling them with the traditional mixture of ingredients.

The blogger wrote,”If Pani Puri Friday isn’t a thing then it really should be because I can’t think of anything better to end the week, especially as pani puri just got a whole lot easier – 35 seconds in the microwave.”

It’s essential to note that the cooking time may vary depending on the power of your microwave. So, it’s advisable to start with 30 seconds and then add an extra 5-10 seconds as required until the Pani puri discs are perfectly fluffed up.

After the Pani puri discs have been heated, it’s necessary to let them cool and set before filling them. This is an important step as filling them while they are still hot and moist can cause the shells to become soggy and lose their crispiness. Once they have cooled down, you can start filling them with your desired ingredients.

A pro tip that the blogger shared is to heat the empty plate in the microwave first before adding the Pani puri discs for even better results. This step ensures that the plate is hot, which helps the discs puff up better when microwaved.

The beauty of this hack is that it’s incredibly simple and accessible. Pani puri discs are readily available in most grocery stores, and almost everyone has a microwave in their home. This technique allows people to enjoy the taste of traditional Pani puri without the need for deep-frying and the associated mess and cleanup.

The fact that this hack went viral on social media is a testament to the power of social media in spreading knowledge and ideas. People are always looking for quick and easy solutions to everyday problems, and this Pani puri hack is a perfect example of how a simple idea can spread like wildfire.
