Mavinkai Chitranna: A summer special Recipe to indulge in love of Mango

This will not only save you from a slap from your Indian mom but also provide numerous health benefit and it won’t kill that it is delicious as well? Originated in the Indian state of Karnataka, this Manvinkai Chitranna or Mango rice is yet another from the category of delicious and underrated Indian food. 

This South Indian rice dish is made with raw mango, rice, and a blend of spices. It is a perfect balance of sweet, sour, and spicy flavors and is usually served during festivals and special occasions.

Recipe for Mavinkai Chitranna

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup rice (preferably basmati)
  • 1 raw mango, grated
  • 2 tablespoons oil
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon asafoetida
  • 1 sprig curry leaves
  • 2 green chilies, chopped
  • Salt to taste

Instructions:

  1. Cook the rice according to the instructions on the package and let it cool.
  2. In a pan, heat the oil and add mustard seeds. Once they start to splutter, add cumin seeds, turmeric powder, and asafoetida.
  3. Add the grated mango, curry leaves, and green chilies to the pan and sauté for 2-3 minutes.
  4. Add the cooked rice to the pan and mix well. Add salt to taste and stir until the rice is coated evenly with the mango mixture.
  5. Cover the pan and let it cook on low heat for 5-7 minutes.
  6. Remove from heat and let it cool for a few minutes. Garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve.
