It is savoured for breakfast and also as a tea-time snack. It’s quite similar to chapati. Made of whole wheat and cereals it turns out to be a very healthy snack for chai lovers. One can have different variations of khakhra by just adding different things like chutney, curd, jam, etc.
There are about 30 varieties of Khakhra. Other than the plain Khakhra, the Khakra comes in other varieties also like Masala Khakhras, Butter Khakhras, and other flavoured Ones. Khakhra can also be transformed into a sweet snack by spreading some ghee and sugar on top of it. Other than this, the Khakhra fulfils another purpose which is of qualifying as a gifting option.

Khakra Recipes for a great Tea-Time
Normal Khakra-
Ingredients-
- 2 cup wheat flour
- 2 pinches of powdered turmeric
- salt as required
- 2 tablespoons refined oil
- 1 ½ tablespoons kasoori methi powder
- 4 teaspoons red chilli powder
- 1 ¼ cup water
Steps-
- Take a bowl and mix wheat flour, red chilli powder, salt, refined oil, turmeric powder, and water. Knead this properly to form a stiff dough.
- Now take out small chunks of the dough and roll them to form small balls. Cover the balls with the muslin cloth.
- Next, press the balls into a circular shape, much like a chapati.
- Turn on the gas and cook on low heat.
- Roast the chakra on the griddle till the colour changes to golden brown on both sides.
- A secret; To make the Khakra even crispier, press it with a cotton cloth while roasting it on the griddle.
- After cooking, you can serve it as a single snack with chai or pair it with chutney, pickles, jams, etc.
Masala Khakra Recipe-
Ingredients-
- Whole wheat flour (atta) 1 cup
- Refined flour (maida) 1 cup
- Garam masala powder 1 teaspoon
- Oil 2 tablespoons
- Water or warm milk as required
- Ghee 4 teaspoons
- Salt to taste
Steps-
- In a bowl, combine the wheat flour, refined flour, salt, and garam masala powder using a sieve. To make a soft dough, add oil and enough water or milk and knead.
- Make eight individual chapatis by rolling out small portions of dough. The chapatti should be roasted over low heat on a hot thick tawa.
- Smear some ghee on both sides. Make a turn and clamp down on it with a wooden press. It’s done when the exterior and interior are both pristine and a light brown colour.
- Remove it from the oven, let it cool, and then store it in an airtight container, but be careful because it’s very crisp and could break.
