Why oatmeal is the perfect breakfast choice for diabetics

0
oats

If you’re looking for a delicious and nutritious breakfast option, oatmeal should be at the top of your list! Not only is it incredibly versatile and easy to prepare, but it’s also packed with health benefits that can help you feel your best all day long.

Oatmeal is a popular breakfast cereal made from oats, and has been around for centuries. It was a staple food in Scotland and other parts of northern Europe, where oats grow well in the cool and damp climate. Oatmeal was traditionally eaten as a porridge and was often served with milk or cream.

Best time to have oatmeal:

Although this delicious and nutritious food option can be consumed any time of the day, it is generally consumed as a breakfast option or mid-meal snack.

Why is it a great breakfast option for diabetics ?

Oatmeal is a great source of sustained energy thanks to its high fiber and complex carbohydrate content. It is an ultimate source of plant based nutrients like proteins, complex carbohydrates, vitamins like B1, B2, B3, and folate, which are important for maintaining healthy skin, hair, and nails, and supporting the immune system.

Oats can help you feel full and satisfied throughout the morning, which can reduce the likelihood of snacking on unhealthy foods later in the day.

Due to its low glycemic index, oatmeal is digested slowly and does not cause a rapid increase in blood sugar levels. This is particularly important for diabetics who need to carefully monitor their blood sugar levels throughout the day. By choosing oatmeal for breakfast, diabetics can enjoy a satisfying and nutritious meal that won’t cause a sudden spike in blood sugar levels.

However, it should be kept in mind that all oatmeal recipes are not necessarily healthy, when it comes to diabetics, as some of these recipes are sweet as well which result in overall increase of glycemic index.

So here are some of the DOs and DONTs that should be kept in mind when it comes to diabetic patients-

Dos:

  1. Eat regular meals and snacks to help keep your blood sugar levels stable.
  2. Choose whole foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats.
  3. Use measuring cups, spoons, and a food scale to control portion sizes.
  4. Focus on high-fiber foods that can help slow down the absorption of sugar in the bloodstream.
  5. Eat a variety of foods from all the food groups to ensure that you get all the nutrients your body needs.

Don’ts:

  1. Avoid sugary drinks like soda, fruit juice, and energy drinks.
  2. Limit your intake of processed and packaged foods, which are often high in salt, sugar, and unhealthy fats.
  3. Don’t skip meals or wait too long between meals, as this can cause your blood sugar to drop too low.
  4. Avoid fried and fatty foods, which can increase your risk of heart disease.
  5. Don’t rely on supplements or vitamins to manage your diabetes without consulting your doctor first.

With endless customization options, you can create a breakfast that suits your taste buds perfectly. Add fresh fruit and nuts for a sweet and crunchy topping, or savory ingredients like cheese and bacon for a more hearty meal. Plus, oatmeal can be prepared in many different ways, from stovetop to microwave to overnight oats, so you can switch things up and never get bored.

Remember that everyone’s nutritional needs are different, so it’s important to work with a registered dietitian or healthcare provider to create a personalized meal plan that works best for you.

Lactose intolerant? How soy milk can be a healthy breakfast alternative for your family

0
Milk

Lactose intolerance is a condition where the body is unable to digest lactose, a type of sugar found in milk and dairy products. It affects millions of people worldwide and can cause symptoms such as bloating, gas, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.

For those who are lactose intolerant, finding healthy alternatives to cow’s milk can be a challenge. Fortunately, several non-dairy milk options are available on the market, with soy milk being one of the most popular and nutritious choices.

What is Soy Milk?

Soy milk is plant-based milk made from whole soybeans or soy protein isolate and water. It has been a staple in many Asian countries for centuries and has gained popularity in the Western world in recent years.

Soy milk is a healthy and nutritious alternative to cow’s milk and is an excellent source of protein, vitamins, and minerals. It has a mild, nutty flavor and a creamy texture similar to that of cow’s milk.

Benefits of Soy Milk:

Soy milk has several health benefits that make it a great choice for those who are lactose intolerant or have a dairy allergy. Here are some of the benefits of soy milk:

  • High in protein: Soy milk is a good source of high-quality plant-based protein. It contains all nine essential amino acids that the body needs to function properly. One cup of soy milk provides around 7-10 grams of protein.
  • Low in saturated fat: Soy milk is low in saturated fat and contains no cholesterol, making it a heart-healthy alternative to cow’s milk.
  • Rich in vitamins and minerals: Soy milk is rich in several essential vitamins and minerals, including calcium, vitamin D, vitamin B12, and potassium. One cup of soy milk contains approximately 300 milligrams of calcium, which is comparable to the amount of calcium in cow’s milk.
  • May reduce the risk of heart disease: Soy milk contains isoflavones, which are plant compounds that have been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease by lowering LDL or “bad” cholesterol levels.
  • May reduce the risk of certain types of cancer: Studies have shown that soy milk may reduce the risk of certain types of cancer, such as breast, prostate, and colon cancer. This is due to the presence of isoflavones, which have anti-cancer properties.

How Soy Milk is a substitute for Cow Milk:

Soy milk can be used as a substitute for cow’s milk in a variety of ways. Here are some ways you can use soy milk:

  • Drinking: Soy milk can be consumed on its own as a beverage. It can be served cold or warm and can be flavored with vanilla, chocolate, or other flavors.
  • Cooking and baking: Soy milk can be used in place of cow’s milk in most recipes, including soups, sauces, and baked goods. It can also be used to make vegan cheese, yogurt, and ice cream.
  • Cereal: Soy milk can be poured over cereal like cow’s milk.
  • Coffee and tea: Soy milk can be used as a dairy-free alternative to milk or cream in coffee and tea.

Soy milk is a healthy and nutritious alternative to cow’s milk for those lactose intolerant or with a dairy allergy. However, it is important to note that soy milk may not be suitable for everyone, particularly those with soy allergies or thyroid issues. It is always recommended to consult with a healthcare professional before making any significant dietary changes.
