The administration under the Bhamragad project has installed a one-of-a-kind artificial intelligence-based machine at Todsa Ashram School in Maharashtra’s Etapalli to enhance the nutrition level of Gadchiroli’s tribal children. ANI news agency has reported that this initiative includes eight government schools.

It’s worth noting that the machine has the capability to take a photo of the student with their food plate, and without any human involvement, determine the quality of the food in just a few seconds.

Shubham Gupta, Assistant Collector of Etapalli and Project Director of Integrated Tribal Development Project said, “Under project Bhamragad, there are eight govt schools. When I used to come to this all-girls Ashram School, I used to feel that they lack nutrition. When we had a preliminary BMI analysis, we found that 61 girls out of the 222 were malnourished. Meals are provided here thrice a day – breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The quantity of the food is up to the mark, and we also follow the menu. So, we wanted to ascertain the cause.”

According to the project director, the establishment of the AI machine has resulted in an improvement in the quality of food as well as an increase in children’s BMI. Shubham Gupta, along with an NGO, deployed this AI machine in a government-aided school as part of an effort to enhance both the quantity and quality of food served.

“I came in touch with an NGO that further connected me to a startup. We deployed here this machine designed by them… Through this machine, we have tried to implement improvement in not only the quantity but also the quality of food. Data collected here can be accessed by Headmaster and me. We have installed it in one of the 8 Ashram Schools so far,” he said.

“The results are very positive. We installed it in September 2022. The quality of food has improved since then and children’s BMI has also improved,” he added.

Hyperlocal grocery platform ApnaMart nears completion of $20 Million Series A funding round led by Accel

ApnaMart
ApnaMart, which is primarily focused on tier II and III cities, is operational in four cities.

Bharat-focused hyperlocal grocery platform, ApnaMart, is reportedly on the brink of closing a Series A funding round with Accel Partners and Sequoia Capital. Three sources who are familiar with the deal have disclosed that the company is set to secure $20 million in investment.

“ApnaMart is in advanced talks to raise anywhere between $15-20 million led by Accel,” said one of the sources requesting anonymity. “Sequoia is an existing investor which is also likely to participate.”

ApnaMart, which is primarily focused on tier II and III cities, is operational in four cities: Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Hazaribagh, and Raipur. The company ensures speedy delivery of groceries within 90 minutes by utilizing a network of local offline stores and franchises to fulfill orders. ApnaMart also provides distribution to grocery and fast-moving consumer goods brands with a specific focus on smaller towns. This enables the company to cater to the needs of customers in these areas more effectively.

“The deal is likely to materialise if nothing changes at the last moment as the term sheet has been signed. ApnaMart will be valued at around $50-$55 million (post money),” said another source who also requested anonymity.

ApnaMart, Co-founded by Chetan Garg and Abhishek Singh, has raised approximately INR 22.6 crore across three tranches. The funds were invested by Sequoia Capital, Disruptors Capital, Amplify Consultancy, AL Trust, Titan Capital, and other investors, according to the company’s regulatory filing with the Registrar of Companies (RoC).

While ten-minute grocery companies like Zepto, BlinkIt, and Dunzo have been growing in popularity and attracting substantial funding in the top 10 cities over the last 18 months, ApnaMart is taking a different approach by focusing exclusively on tier II and III cities. Although the company does not currently face direct competition in the cities where it operates, it may encounter indirect competition from BigBasket, and as it expands to states like NCR, Rajasthan, and UP, it could also face competition from DealShare and CityMall.

Meat-free brand VFC has received a £6m ($7.432m) investment from vegan-focused investment firm Veg Capital.

With the funding from Veg Capital, VFC, the meat-free brand, has plans to expand both domestically and internationally. VFC has expressed openness to accepting further investment from other companies, even though Veg Capital is currently the sole investor.

Matthew Glover, who is the Founder of VFC, leads Veg Capital, which invested £7.5m into the meat-free brand in 2022 and £2.5m in 2021.

Expanding beyond the UK, the vegan company currently operates in the Netherlands and the US, and has plans to enter the Nordic countries, Belgium, and Spain, with further expansion on the horizon for France, Germany, and Australia. VFC is also set to invest in adjacent categories, such as the chilled aisle, later this year.

In 2020, Matthew Glover and Adam Lyons launched their brand and in 2021, it won distribution in Tesco. The brand’s coverage has since increased tenfold in the last six months, but no specific figures were given in the statement. The brand has also expanded its distribution to include Sainsbury’s, Asda, Morrisons, Ocado, and Waitrose.

VFC CEO Dave Sparrow said, “We’ve had an awesome journey so far, with the past six to 12 months really shaping the future success of the business. Veg Capital has been a fantastic partner for the VFC team and we are hungrier than ever to realise the full potential of the brand and remove animals from the food chain. We will continue to unlock more shelf space across our global market, building on our existing frozen range, stretching into different meal occasions and adjacent categories with the incredible NPD pipeline our team has built.”

Additionally, the brand has been introduced to the Dutch supermarket chain Albert Heijn, as well as UK wholesalers.

“The business is open to further investment and we would welcome the opportunity to speak with investors who are as excited about the future of VFC as the team who are driving it,” Sparrow added.

Boson Whitewater and SGBS Unnati Foundation to deploy water ATMs in Karnataka villages, providing access to clean drinking water

Boson Whitewater
As part of this project, 10 water ATMs have already been set up in Malur and Doddaballapur villages on the outskirts of Bengaluru, providing safe and clean drinking water to more than 1500 families.

Boson Whitewater, a startup situated in Bengaluru, has collaborated with SGBS Unnati Foundation, an NGO, to launch water ATMs in rural regions of Karnataka, providing easy and secure access to drinking water.

ExxonMobil, along with Broadridge, has financed several initiatives under their CSR program, including the establishment of water ATMs in rural areas of Karnataka. As part of this project, 10 water ATMs have already been set up in Malur and Doddaballapur villages on the outskirts of Bengaluru, providing safe and clean drinking water to more than 1500 families.

Unnati Foundation is a non-profit organization that focuses on providing skill development opportunities to underprivileged youth across multiple states. Its primary objective is to equip them with necessary skills that can help them secure employment. According to a statement, in the financial year 2022-23, the organization has provided training to over 28,000 young individuals. Additionally, Unnati Foundation supports the establishment of water ATMs in villages to ensure that rural communities have access to safe drinking water.

Boson Whitewater was recently approached by several village panchayats in Malur and Doddaballapur to provide safe drinking water for their communities. It was reported that some areas in these villages had been severely affected by fluoride contamination, causing health problems for numerous families. Consequently, Unnati Foundation collaborated with Boson Whitewater to address the issue and work towards ensuring that safe drinking water is accessible to the affected communities.

After an evaluation of the site recommended by Unnati Foundation, Boson Whitewater installed water ATMs in the area. The company provided Panchayats with Water ATM cards, and each family was given a preloaded Water Card worth INR 50, which can be used to withdraw 20 liters of water by swiping them. To ensure the long-term sustainability of the initiative, a nominal fee of INR 5 is charged for each 20-litre water can. ExxonMobil and Broadridge have provided financial assistance for the program.

Commenting on the initiative, Ramesh Swamy, Director, of Unnati Foundation, said, “We would like to thank ExxonMobil and Broadridge for their financial support for the projects. This collaboration is a great example of how social ventures and private players can collaborate for the greater good of the community. Through our joint efforts, more people in rural communities can now have easy access to safe and clean drinking water, which is essential for health and well-being. We look forward to working closely with Boson Whitewater to reach many more rural communities across India”

Vikas Brahmavar, CEO and Co-founder of Boson Whitewater, said, “At Boson Whitewater, our overarching goal is to use our technology to create easy access to clean water. We look for opportunities like this that allow us to make a huge difference to communities that find it difficult to access clean water. We are excited about our partnership with Unnati Foundation and look forward to implementing more projects together in the future.”

Fresh setback for Blinkit as 1000+ delivery agents defect to competitors amidst incentive dispute

Around 1,000 Blinkit delivery executives in the National Capital Region have recently joined competing quick-commerce firms like Swiggy Instamart, Zepto, and BB Now. (Representative Image)

According to media reports, it has been revealed that around 1,000 Blinkit delivery executives in the National Capital Region have recently joined competing quick-commerce firms like Swiggy Instamart, Zepto, and BB Now. This action has been taken in protest of a recent change in the payout structure that was implemented by their company.

Earlier this month, Blinkit, a company owned by Zomato, announced that they would be adjusting their payout structure for delivery executives. Instead of a fixed INR 25 per delivery plus a peak-hour incentive of INR 7 per trip, the company will now pay a minimum of INR 15 per trip, with a distance-based component. This change has been met with opposition from Blinkit’s delivery workers, who argue that it will have a negative impact on their salaries.

Multiple Blinkit dark stores, which are small warehouses, were forced to shut down in Delhi, Gurugram, Noida, Faridabad, and Ghaziabad for a few days due to the ongoing protest by delivery executives. Although the company attempted to resume operations, numerous dark stores in Delhi and Gurugram are still closed to customers as there is a shortage of delivery personnel. Blinkit manages more than 200 of these warehouses in the Delhi-NCR region, using them to distribute goods to customers located within a 2-3 km radius of each store.

In an attempt to address the ongoing protest by delivery executives, Blinkit distributed a special 10-day incentive rate card in some locations of Delhi and Noida last week. This rate card outlined that delivery workers may earn between INR 700 and INR 1200 if they meet certain order milestones.

During the same week, the company took the step of de-registering numerous Blinkit riders. Delivery executives based in Gurugram and Delhi have stated that they received a notification on the Blinkit delivery partner app, informing them that some outlets were being shut down as there had been no activity at these locations in the past three to four days.

The notification informed the delivery executives that their registration with the platform had been terminated. As a result of the protest, nearly 100 Blinkit stores were forced to temporarily shut down. However, they were able to resume operations last week.

This product is perfect for people who are looking for a natural and healthy source of protein to help them build muscle, recover from exercise, and support overall health and wellness.

The Benefits of Using a Natural Plant-Based Protein Powder

  • Aids Muscle Building and Recovery

Protein is essential for building and repairing muscles. When you exercise, your muscles undergo stress and damage, and protein helps repair and rebuild them. A high-quality protein powder can help you meet your daily protein requirements and support muscle growth and recovery.

  • Helps with Weight Loss

Protein is also beneficial for weight loss because it can help suppress appetite and reduce calorie intake. When you consume protein, it triggers the release of hormones that signal fullness, which can help you eat less and feel more satisfied. Additionally, protein can help preserve muscle mass while you lose weight, which can help you maintain a healthy metabolism.

  • Easy to Digest

Plant-based protein powders are typically easier to digest than animal-based protein powders because they contain fiber and digestive enzymes. This can help reduce digestive discomfort and make it easier for your body to absorb and utilize the protein.

  • Good for the Environment

Plant-based protein powders are more sustainable and environmentally friendly than animal-based protein powders. Animal agriculture is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions and other environmental problems, and choosing plant-based options can help reduce your carbon footprint.

How to Use Origin Nutrition’s 100% Natural Plant Protein Powder:

  • Determine Your Protein Needs

To get a fit body like Sidharth Malhotra, you need to consume enough protein to support muscle growth and recovery. The recommended daily intake of protein for adults is 0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight, but if you are exercising regularly, you may need more. Aim for at least 1 gram of protein per kilogram of body weight per day, and adjust as needed based on your activity level and goals.

  • Incorporate Protein Powder into Your Diet

One of the easiest ways to increase your protein intake is to add protein powder to your diet. You can mix Origin Nutrition’s 100% Natural Plant Protein Powder with water, milk, or your favorite non-dairy milk alternative. You can also use it to make smoothies, protein bars, or other healthy snacks.

  • Combine with a Healthy Diet and Exercise Routine

While protein powder can be a helpful addition to your diet, it is important to remember that it is not a magic solution for getting a fit body. You still need to eat a healthy and balanced diet and exercise regularly to achieve your goals. Aim for a variety of nutrient-dense whole foods, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein sources, and incorporate strength training and cardiovascular exercise into your routine.

White potatoes vs sweet potatoes – Which is the healthier option?

0
whitesweetpotatoes

Potatoes are one of the most popular and versatile vegetables in the world. They come in different varieties, with the most common being white potatoes and sweet potatoes. Both types of potatoes are nutritious and delicious, but they have different nutritional profiles, which may make one a better choice than the other depending on your dietary needs and preferences.

In this article, we’ll compare the nutritional benefits of white potatoes and sweet potatoes to help you decide which is the healthier option for you.

White Potatoes

White potatoes, also known as Irish potatoes or baking potatoes, are a staple food in many countries. They are a good source of complex carbohydrates, fiber, and several vitamins and minerals. However, they are often criticized for their high glycemic index (GI), which means they can cause a rapid spike in blood sugar levels.

White potatoes are also a good source of other micronutrients, such as folate, niacin, and phosphorus.

Despite their high carbohydrate content, white potatoes can be part of a healthy diet, especially if you eat them in moderation and choose healthy cooking methods. Boiling or baking potatoes with the skin on them can help retain their nutrients and fiber. However, avoid deep-frying potatoes or adding excessive amounts of butter, cheese, or salt, which can increase their calorie and sodium content.

Health Benefits of White Potatoes

Despite their reputation as a high-carb, high-calorie food, white potatoes offer several health benefits when consumed in moderation as part of a balanced diet. Here are some of the key health benefits of white potatoes:

  • Good source of carbohydrates: White potatoes are a rich source of complex carbohydrates, which are important for providing energy to the body. The carbohydrates in potatoes are slowly digested and absorbed, which can help regulate blood sugar levels and prevent spikes and crashes in energy.
  • High in vitamin C: One medium-sized white potato contains 28% of the daily value of vitamin C, which is important for supporting immune function, wound healing, and skin health. Vitamin C is also a powerful antioxidant that can help protect the body from damage caused by free radicals.
  • Rich in potassium: White potatoes are a good source of potassium, which is an essential mineral that helps regulate blood pressure, maintain fluid balance, and support nerve and muscle function. One medium-sized potato contains 26% of the daily value of potassium.
  • May improve digestion: White potatoes are a good source of fiber, which is important for promoting regular bowel movements and maintaining a healthy digestive system. One medium-sized potato contains 3 grams of fiber, which is about 12% of the daily value.
  • May reduce inflammation: Some studies suggest that white potatoes may have anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, and arthritis. However, more research is needed to confirm these findings.

Sweet Potatoes

Sweet potatoes are a type of root vegetable that is native to South America. They have a sweeter taste than white potatoes and come in different varieties, such as orange, purple, and white. Sweet potatoes are an excellent source of complex carbohydrates, fiber, and several vitamins and minerals, and they are often recommended as a healthier alternative to white potatoes.

Sweet potatoes are also a good source of other micronutrients, such as calcium, phosphorus, and manganese.

One of the main advantages of sweet potatoes over white potatoes is their lower glycemic index, which means they are less likely to cause a rapid spike in blood sugar levels. This makes them a good choice for people with diabetes or those who want to manage their blood sugar levels.

Like white potatoes, sweet potatoes can be prepared in various ways, such as baking, boiling, or roasting. They are also a popular ingredient in many sweet and savory dishes, such as pies, casseroles, and fries. However, avoid adding excessive amounts of sugar, syrup, or marshmallows to sweet potato dishes, which can negate their health benefits and increase their calorie and sugar content.

Health Benefits of Sweet Potatoes

Sweet potatoes are often considered a healthier alternative to white potatoes because of their lower glycemic index and higher nutrient content. Here are some of the key health benefits of sweet potatoes:

  • High in antioxidants: Sweet potatoes are a rich source of antioxidants, such as beta-carotene, which is converted into vitamin A in the body. Vitamin A is important for maintaining healthy vision, skin, and immune function. One medium-sized sweet potato contains 438% of the daily value of vitamin A.
  • Good source of fiber: Sweet potatoes are a good source of fiber, which is important for promoting digestive health, regulating blood sugar levels, and reducing the risk of chronic diseases. One medium-sized sweet potato contains 4 grams of fiber, which is about 16% of the daily value.
  • May help regulate blood sugar levels: Sweet potatoes have a lower glycemic index than white potatoes, which means they are less likely to cause a rapid spike in blood sugar levels. This makes them a good choice for people with diabetes or those who want to manage their blood sugar levels.
  • May improve heart health: Some studies suggest that sweet potatoes may help improve heart health by reducing inflammation, lowering blood pressure, and improving cholesterol levels. However, more research is needed to confirm these findings.
  • May boost brain function: Sweet potatoes are a good source of nutrients that are important for brain health, such as vitamin B6 and potassium. Some studies suggest that these nutrients may help improve memory, concentration, and cognitive function.

Which is Healthier: White Potatoes or Sweet Potatoes?

Both white potatoes and sweet potatoes are nutritious and delicious, and both can be part of a healthy diet when consumed in moderation and prepared in healthy ways. The choice between white potatoes and sweet potatoes largely depends on your individual dietary needs and preferences.

If you are looking for a low-glycemic alternative to white potatoes, sweet potatoes may be a better choice. They are also higher in antioxidants and fiber, which may provide additional health benefits. However, if you are looking for a good source of vitamin C and potassium, or if you prefer the taste and texture of white potatoes, they can also be a healthy choice.

It is important to note that both white potatoes and sweet potatoes can be high in calories and sodium when prepared with added fats, such as butter or cheese, or when consumed in large portions. To maximize the health benefits of potatoes, it is recommended to prepare them in healthy ways, such as baking, roasting, or boiling, and to limit the use of added fats and sodium. Additionally, it is important to incorporate a variety of nutrient-dense foods into your diet to ensure you are meeting your daily nutritional needs.

Both white potatoes and sweet potatoes have unique health benefits and can be part of a healthy diet when consumed in moderation and prepared in healthy ways. White potatoes are a good source of carbohydrates, vitamin C, potassium, and fiber, while sweet potatoes are higher in antioxidants and fiber, and have a lower glycemic index. The choice between the two largely depends on individual dietary needs and preferences. Regardless of which type of potato you choose, it is important to be mindful of portion sizes and avoid adding high-calorie and high-sodium toppings.
