Common Goal

Here is how Fermented food might be your Gut’s BFF and a Rising Trend

Foods or drinks that have undergone regulated microbial growth, as well as the enzymatic conversion of food components, are referred to as fermented foods. Fermented foods have recently gained popularity, largely due to the claimed health advantages.

You might not be familiar with the increasingly popular trio of kefir, kimchi, and kombucha, but researchers claim that fermented foods like these can benefit your gut, which houses the majority of your immune system.

Why is fermented food the next big trend?

Although fermented foods have always been a staple of our diets, food experts think that meals that improve immunity will soon become popular. Learn more about it now!

Fermented foods are at the junction of two strong trends, including the rising demand for natural foods and superfoods that promote immunity, according to observers who keep a close eye on the food landscape. The consensus is that fermented foods are the upcoming big thing.

Trade journals estimate that as of 2019, the global market for just one fermented good, Kombucha Tea, was worth about $1.7 billion. This tea is made using black, green, or white tea and is flavoured with fruits, herbs, and spices like ginger and mint along with flowers like hibiscus and jasmine. The refreshing and reinvigorating’ beverage comes attractively packed in 250 ml bottles and costs between INR 120 and INR 250 for each bottle.

The traditional Indian diet has always included fermented foods, especially in rural regions. Dhokla is a common fermented breakfast food in Gujarat, whereas idli, dosa, and appam are popular options in southern India. The ideal light dinner for the summer in the east is Pantha bhaat, also known as papal, which is rice that has been prepared the night before and soaked in water. Many dishes—including Kadi, Kulu, Mor Kuzhambu, etc.—are made with buttermilk.

Fermented foods are made with grains and legumes, milk and dairy products, as well as vegetables and fruits. In Sikkim, where the farmers first let the green mustard and radish leave wilt for a few days before pounding them with a little water, is where sweets like jalebi and Gundruk are made.

Some examples of Fermented Food items are-

  1. Kefir
  2. Kombucha
  3. Sauerkraut
  4. Pickles
  5. Miso
  6. Tempeh
  7. Natto
  8. Kimchi
  9. Raw Chees
  10. Yogurt
  11. Apple Cider Vinegar
  12. Kvass
  13. Sourdough Bread
  14. Cottage Cheese
  15. Coconut Kefir

Proponents of fermented foods claim that the process raises the nutritional value of components and improves the body’s ability to absorb vitamins and minerals. Scientific studies have verified many of these assertions.

Complex sugars and carbs are broken down by fermentation, making them simpler to digest. Certainly, probiotic foods enhance intestinal health. But it doesn’t seem very prudent to think that all fermented foods are superfoods that significantly strengthen our immune systems and delay ageing, or that these can be miracle cures for diabetes, blood pressure, etc. Therefore, it is important to understand which foods in one’s diet will be healthy and which won’t.

To Try: Foods that will help lower your blood pressure

0

We all are surrounded by bad eating and lifestyle habits, and as a result, many health conditions naturally take over our bodies. High blood pressure is one of them. Over one billion people across the world suffer from hypertension or high blood pressure.

A healthy diet is vital for decreasing blood pressure and maintaining appropriate levels, and studies have shown that having certain foods in your diet, particularly those high in key nutrients such as potassium and magnesium, lowers blood pressure levels.

Don’t worry if your blood pressure is on the high side because we have researched foods for you that you can consume and naturally your blood pressure will lower.

  • Amaranth

Consuming whole grains such as amaranth may help decrease your blood pressure. Whole-grain diets may reduce your risk of high blood pressure, according to research. A study of the research discovered that a 30-gram increase in whole grains per day was related to an 8% lower risk of high blood pressure. It is a great source of magnesium, and one cup of amaranth gives you 38% of your daily magnesium requirements.

  • Carrots

Carrots are a popular vegetable in many people’s diets because they are crunchy, sweet, and healthy. Carrots include phenolic chemicals such as chlorogenic, p-coumaric, and caffeic acids, which help relax blood vessels and reduce inflammation, potentially lowering blood pressure levels. Although carrots can be eaten raw or cooked, eating them raw may be more useful for lowering blood pressure.

  • Garlic

Garlic contains antibacterial and antifungal capabilities, which may be attributed to allicin, its principal active component.

Garlic in general, and specifically Kyolic garlic, can reduce high blood pressure and cholesterol-induced arterial stiffness. Garlic may improve the flavour of a variety of savoury dishes, including stir-fries, soups, and omelettes. It can also be used as a seasoning in place of salt.

  • Chia and flax seeds

Chia and flax seeds are tiny seeds rich in minerals necessary for healthy blood pressure regulation, such as potassium, magnesium, and fibre.

Blood pressure frequently rises as weight increases. Being overweight can also result in interrupted breathing while sleeping, which elevates blood pressure even further. Weight loss is one of the most beneficial lifestyle adjustments for blood pressure regulation. If you are overweight or obese, even losing a small amount of weight can help lower your blood pressure.

In addition to weight loss, here are some additional tips that you can incorporate into your daily routine to get better results:

  • Cut sodium from your diet.
  • Focus on eating more potassium.
  • Quit alcohol
  • Minimize sugar consumption.
  • Stay active and do some sort of exercise.

Cautious warning: All these foods help reduce your blood pressure, but always consult your physician before trying anything, and don’t forget to be moderate and avoid eating junk food.

Peppermint  Hot Chocolate

It is produced with melted chocolate, milk, and a small amount of cream, making it rich, warm, and silky smooth when consumed. It is refreshing yet doesn’t taste like mouthwash because there is just the proper amount of peppermint. Why limit yourself to just one type of chocolate in your mug? It is also garnished with a generous dollop of cocoa whipped cream.

Hazelnut Hot Chocolate

This isn’t your average cup of hot cocoa. In essence, it is similar to drinking chocolate. In actuality, it is equivalent to drinking Nutella. I don’t have the same Nutella obsession as everyone else online. But this alcohol-free, family-friendly hazelnut hot chocolate is the ideal holiday or winter indulgence. You’ll stay warm with this creamy, rich, chocolatey, hazelnut beverage!

Belgium Hot Chocolate

Foods that can trigger your constipation and that will ease it out!

0

The unhealthy lifestyle that surrounds us is enough to give us an upset stomach and many gut-related illnesses. In order to cure them and feel relaxed, we need to make certain changes in our diet and lifestyle.

Constipation is a common problem among adults, around 27% of adults in the world suffer from constipation, bloating, and gas issues. Constipation is defined as having fewer than three bowel movements in a week. The older you get and become less active, the higher the chances that you will experience constipation. Some foods are rich in fibre and can relieve chronic constipation, whereas there is a list of foods that can trigger it and make it worse.

We have made a list of foods that are not so tummy-friendly and can cause problems like constipation.

Without wasting time, let’s begin!

  • Grains that are processed

White bread, white rice, and white pasta, for example, are lower in fibre and maybe more constipating than whole grains. This is due to the removal of the grain’s bran and germ during processing. The bran, in particular, includes fibre, a substance that adds weight to the stool and aids in its movement.

  • Eggs

They have a high protein content but a low fibre content. You are not required to remove them from the menu. Simply incorporate some high-fibre foods into the mix. Consider making an omelette with fresh spinach and tomatoes.

  • Alcohol

Just like coffee, alcohol can make it difficult for your body to retain water. This can cause problems with your bathroom visits until you rehydrate. If you’re going to drink a cocktail, keep a glass of water nearby to keep things moving.

  • Tea

This may surprise readers, but it is advisable not to drink tea when constipated. While herbal teas are unlikely to be harmful, tannins in generic, bagged black teas bind stools together. Tea frequently contains caffeine, and while a small amount might stimulate the digestive system, too much can dehydrate the body, having the opposite effect.

Now that we have talked about the worst foods for constipation, let’s have a look at some foods that can ease this problem.

  1. Apples
  2. Pears
  3. Figs
  4. Sweet Potato
  5. Chia Seeds

Apart from all these, drink plenty of water and other liquids that will help with your digestion. Consume more fibre-rich foods and green vegetables, which will significantly improve your constipation and related symptoms.

Modern-day Skin Care Resolutions that will nourish your skin this year

0

There are very few people who have genetically glowing and flawless skin; the remaining ones have to do hard work to achieve that beautiful and seamless skin texture. As the new year comes, many resolutions can come to our mind, like going to the gym daily, quitting smoking or drinking, improving personal and professional relationships, and many more. But this new year, start to focus on a self-care routine and make sure you follow all steps related to skin care religiously.

To make your work easy, we have curated a list of skin care resolutions that you can choose from and get the skin you desire.

  1. Try collagen-rich foods and supplements

The skin gradually loses moisture and gets increasingly dry throughout your mid-20s, causing the connective tissue to lose firmness and elasticity. As part of your skincare commitment for the new year, try including collagen-rich foods in your regular diet, like leafy greens, citrus fruits, fish, poultry, soy, and beans. Hydrolyzed collagen supplements can improve skin elasticity, density, wrinkle reduction, and smoothness.

  1. Drink plenty of water

Water is essential for the healthy upkeep of the body, but it is also crucial for the health of your skin. When the skin is adequately moisturised, it appears smooth and luminous. Set up a regimen in which you fill up your daily water intake and drink enough fluids to keep your skin moisturized from the inside out.

  1. Mask once a week

Masking on a frequent basis can cause significant changes in the skin. To notice results, apply a mask after cleansing one to three times each week. Put your feet up and relax while you wait for the mask to do its thing.

  1. Do not sleep with your makeup on

Your skin restores itself overnight, and makeup left on the skin doesn’t aid the process. Develop a nightly skincare routine to avoid clogged pores and premature ageing. If you struggle with routine, try removing your makeup as soon as you get home. Always keep a backup bottle of makeup remover and cotton pads by your nightstand.

Now that you aim to get better skin this new year, don’t forget to moisturize your skin day and night to have soft, super supple skin. Moreover, invest in a skincare routine, and this doesn’t mean you have to buy vegan, expensive, and fancy products; just get the right products, and you are good to go.

Keep glowing!

Burger Singh intends to set up 16 outlets in Bihar

0

Burger Singh, an Indian burger brand, wants to increase its footprint in the state of Bihar by opening 16 additional locations there, six of which would be in the capital city of Patna. There are currently 3 Burger Singh locations in the state, located in Saharsa, Gaya, and Purnea, respectively. To strengthen its supply chain in East and North-East India, the QSR chain recently revealed its intentions to build a new warehouse in Kolkata.

Burger Singh also hopes to create a presence in the states of Jharkhand, Orissa, and Chattisgarh in addition to Bihar. Burger Singh, the third-largest burger brand in India, has recently experienced an astronomical spike in popularity as a result of mixing Indian flavors with American hamburgers.

Burger Singh has grown significantly over the past year, going from 50 outlets in December 2021 to 100+ outlets in 54 cities at the moment, with 83 operational outlets and 20 under construction.

The QSR company has announced plans to open 35 locations in Maharashtra, 8 locations in Madhya Pradesh, and 48 locations in Gujarat as part of its national expansion.

Burger Singh recently raised INR 30 crore in a Series A round led by Negen Capital, valuing the company at INR 200 crore. Due to favorable unit-level economics and a uniquely Indian palate, the QSR chain has experienced rapid growth in a highly competitive market.

These very same factors have made Burger Singh a favorite among Indian customers as well as aspiring business owners who are joining the franchise network of the company in an effort to be a part of the Burger Singh story.

“In order to make a successful business endeavor, our business development team matches the appropriate entrepreneur with the right location and is constantly on the lookout for places with great potential,” remarked Burger Singh co-founder Rahul Seth.

81 crore people in India are likely to receive 5 kg of food every month

Wheat

On Sunday, the first day of the New Year 2023, the updated food security program mandated by the National Food Security Act will go into force, providing 5 kg of free food grain each month to 81.3 crore individuals across the country.

The general managers of the Food Corporation of India (FCI) have been instructed by the government to “assess and report” by visiting three ration stores each day for the first week. They are required to submit reports every day.

The cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, approved the proposal to completely liberate the NFSA foodgrain entitlement for the needy in 2023. The administration also canceled the PM Garib Kalyan Ann Yojna with this move, which was launched in the wake of the COVID-19 epidemic in 2020. The food ministry reports that on Friday, Sanjeev Chopra, the union’s food secretary, met with each state’s food secretary to go over the distribution of free foodgrains and any technological issues.

The government has also told states and UTs how to pay dealers’ margins (owners of ration stores) for giving beneficiaries food.

The PMGKAY became more well-known after the epidemic, when an estimated 60 million migrant workers returned to their home states. After beginning in 2020 and being frequently extended, it continued for 28 months despite being stopped for six months. A cabinet memo states that an estimate of the total cost of PMGKAY from the time of its launch to December 2022 is 3.91 lakh crore.

The increased demand for food can be solved by millets: EAM Jaishankar

0

Millets offer an entirely different value proposition at a time when there are concerns about a worldwide food shortage, according to S. Jaishankar, minister of external affairs, who also noted that they are considerably healthier than the everyday consumption of rice and wheat.

On Sunday, Jaishankar said India can cultivate millets, which offers a solution to the rising food demands around the world. He was speaking to members of the Indian diaspora in the capital city of Austria.

In preparation for the International Year of Millets (IYM), which started on January 1, the government announced on January 1 that it had planned a number of activities to promote millet all over the country.

“The daily cereals, rice, and wheat we consume are much less healthy for all of us than millets.” Prior to its displacement, it was the food that was most common in our societies. “Both the water and carbon footprints are significantly reduced,” Jaishankar remarked.

“In the modern world, where there is concern over food scarcity, millet presents a very different value proposition.” “Currently, one kilo of millets is farmed and consumed in India for virtually every five kg of wheat,” he said.

The Indus Valley civilization consumed millets, one of the first crops to be domesticated in India, according to a number of findings. At the moment, millet is farmed in more than 130 nations, and it is a traditional food for more than 500 million people in Asia and Africa.

“In fact, we can cultivate it.” It can meet a large portion of our rising food demands. Not just us, but also a significant number of nations in Africa, Asia, and portions of the Middle East, “On the second leg of his two-nation tour, Jaishankar, who had just arrived from Cyprus, stated.

Compared to other staples of a similar nature, millets are largely a Kharif crop in India and require less water and agricultural inputs. Millets are important because they have a huge potential to create jobs, increase farmer income, and ensure food and nutritional security around the world.

In addition, millet is a key component of the G-20 meetings, and delegates will get a full millet experience through sampling, interactions with farmers, and interactive sessions with start-ups and FPOs.

“We hope to achieve during our G20 presidency—in fact, we are doing it right now—that every foreign guest I receive in India or the Prime Minister gets in India has a significant portion of the meal that is millet-based,” Jaishankar added.

On December 6, the UN agency Food and Agriculture Organization hosted the IYM inaugural ceremony in Rome, Italy. Within the Parliamentary Complex, the Indian government sponsored a special “Millet Luncheon ” for parliamentarians.

India has given millets top priority because of their huge potential and alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations. The year 2018 was subsequently proclaimed the National Year of Millets after millets were rebranded as “nutritional cereals” in April.

In order for India to remain at the forefront of the millennium-year celebrations, the UN’s designation of 2023 as IYM was crucial. In addition to presenting India as the “global hub of millets,” Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also discussed his goal of making IYM 2023 a “people’s movement.”

It is anticipated that between 2021 and 2026, the worldwide millets market will grow at a CAGR of 4.5%.
