Online food ordering giant Delivery Hero anticipates continued growth acceleration throughout 2023

Delivery hero

Delivery Hero, the German online food ordering and delivery company, has predicted single-digit percentage growth in gross merchandise value (GMV) for 2023. This forecast follows a strong start to the second quarter and an expectation of continued growth acceleration throughout the year.

This year, the Berlin-based company anticipates a growth rate of 5% to 7% in constant currency for its gross merchandise value (GMV).

Delivery Hero experienced a growth surge due to the pandemic, but now the company is concentrating on achieving long-awaited profitability. This shift in focus comes as investor confidence in the rapidly expanding but largely unprofitable sector begins to dwindle.

“We still see enormous potential to keep driving profitability for many years to come,” Chief Financial Officer Emmanuel Thomassin said in a statement, as the company seeks to increase customer base and expand its business beyond food delivery services.

Delivery Hero reported a first-quarter gross merchandise value (GMV) of €11.2 billion ($12.39 billion), which represents a 2.1% increase in constant currency. This figure aligns with analysts’ estimates, as per the company’s compiled consensus.

Delivery Hero has confirmed its full-year outlook, which predicts a core profit (EBITDA) margin to gross merchandise value (GMV) exceeding 0.5%.

Carlsberg challenges valuation of Khetan’s 33% stake in India-Nepal operations

Carlsberg, the third-largest beer producer in the world, announced that it contested the assessment of Khetan Group, its partner, in the sale of its complete 33% interest in Carlsberg South Asia Pte Ltd (CSAPL) for $744 million.

At the put option valuation of $744 million, Khetan Group issued a formal notice to sell its complete 33% share in CSAPL, the holding firm for Carlsberg’s operations in India and Nepal.

“The Carlsberg Group has disputed the put option valuation and the two parties have agreed to refer the issue to arbitration. We cannot comment any further on the timing of the outcome,” Ulrica Fearn, Chief Financial Officer at Carlsberg, told investors during its earnings call.

Carlsberg and its partner Khetan Group have been embroiled in a boardroom conflict over the last few years due to concerns raised by their auditor about financial misconduct, such as incorrect payments, embezzlement, and kickbacks from customers.

Carlsberg has encountered significant disputes regarding the shareholders’ agreement with CSAPL Holdings Pte Ltd (CSAPLH), its partner in CSAPL, the holding company. Carlsberg possesses a 66% stake, whereas CSAPLH owns the remaining share in the holding company.

In February of this year, Carlsberg had stated that the transaction could potentially conclude in 2023, provided that any disputes raised by shareholders were resolved and regulatory approvals were obtained within the specified timelines.

Carlsberg is the third-largest beer producer in India, trailing behind United Spirits and Ab InBev, and commands roughly 18% of the total beer market. Nevertheless, a considerable portion of its sales is attributed to its powerful beer lineup, primarily Tuborg.

The firm stated that following the acquisition of the stake, it would evaluate the Indian enterprise and introduce a range of worldwide brands.

Sainsbury’s outperforms market expectations despite rising food prices and increased competition

0
Sainsbury's
Sainsbury's has projected a profit range of £640-£700 million for the fiscal year 2023-24, surpassing the analysts' mean prediction of £631 million.

Sainsbury’s, the British supermarket chain, has commenced its new financial year with significant momentum despite the uncertain outlook for consumer spending. The company has predicted a profit outcome that exceeds market expectations.

The inflation in the UK has been surging for over a year, and it has outpaced the growth of salaries for almost all employees, putting pressure on Britons.

In March, official data from the UK revealed that food prices had risen by 19.1% compared to the same month in the previous year, marking the most significant increase since August 1977. Furthermore, industry data indicates that grocery inflation was 17.3% in April.

On Thursday, Simon Roberts, the CEO of Sainsbury’s, informed reporters that the company has consistently raised its prices less than its primary competitors. As a result, the supermarket’s customers have paid “less than half the headline rate of inflation”.

With a 15% share of the UK’s grocery market, Sainsbury’s is attempting to balance the escalating expenses of procuring products from suppliers and keeping its customers from shifting to budget-friendly retailers such as Aldi and Lidl. Additionally, the company is facing elevated employee wage expenses.

Sainsbury’s underlying pre-tax profit for the year ending on March 4 was £690 million ($861 million), which was at the upper end of its guidance but a decline from £730 million in the previous year (2021-22).

Sainsbury’s revenue increased by 5.3% to £31.5 billion, with like-for-like sales in the fourth quarter rising by 7.8%.

Sainsbury’s has projected a profit range of £640-£700 million for the fiscal year 2023-24, surpassing the analysts’ mean prediction of £631 million.

“It’s a really strong set of numbers,” said one top 50 shareholder, particularly highlighting Sainsbury’s free cash flow of 645 million pounds.

Sainsbury’s stocks dropped by 0.6% at 11:33 GMT, but have surged by 30% since the beginning of the year. Bestway, the owner of Costcutter, has acquired a 4.47% stake in Sainsbury’s, but it has denied having any intentions to initiate a takeover bid.

Earlier in April, Tesco, the market leader, posted a 6.3% drop in annual profit and predicted a flat outcome for 2023-24, while in March, Asda, the third largest supermarket, reported a 24% decrease.

Despite performing well against its traditional competitors, Sainsbury’s is still losing market share to discounters as they continue to open new stores, according to monthly industry data.

Sainsbury’s invested over 560 million pounds in the two years leading up to March 2023, financed by cost savings, to maintain competitive prices and this has affected its profit. The supermarket is matching Aldi’s prices on hundreds of crucial items and utilizing its Nectar loyalty program.

The pre-tax profit for the year 2022-23, as required by law, decreased by 62% to 327 million pounds due to the impact of asset impairments. Despite this, a dividend of 13.1 pence per share, consistent with the previous year, will be distributed. (Conversion rate: $1 = 0.8012 pounds)

Is it safe to eat Sprouted Potatoes? Here’s what experts say

0
sprouted potatoes

Potatoes are a staple food in many households around the world. They are versatile, nutritious, and easy to prepare. However, sometimes potatoes can start to sprout, which raises questions about whether they are safe to eat. In this article, we will explore the safety of eating sprouted potatoes and what experts have to say about it.

What are sprouted potatoes?

Sprouted potatoes are potatoes that have started to grow shoots from their eyes or nodes. These shoots are a natural part of the potato’s life cycle, and they emerge when the potato is exposed to warmth and moisture. While some people discard sprouted potatoes, others choose to eat them.

Are sprouted potatoes safe to eat?

The safety of eating sprouted potatoes is a controversial topic. Some experts say that sprouted potatoes are safe to eat, while others advise against it. The main concern with sprouted potatoes is the potential presence of solanine, a natural toxin that can cause food poisoning.

Solanine is a glycoalkaloid that is found in many members of the nightshade family, including potatoes. It is a natural pesticide that protects the potato plant from insects and other predators. While solanine is not harmful in small amounts, it can be toxic when consumed in large quantities.

The amount of solanine in a potato increases as it sprouts, and the highest concentrations are found in the sprouts and the skin. Eating potatoes that contain high levels of solanine can cause symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and stomach cramps. In severe cases, it can even lead to coma or death.

Risks of eating sprouted potatoes:

The risks of eating sprouted potatoes are primarily related to the presence of solanine. As mentioned earlier, solanine is a natural toxin that can cause food poisoning. The amount of solanine in a potato increases as it sprouts, so the longer the sprouts, the higher the concentration of solanine.

While most healthy adults can tolerate small amounts of solanine without any adverse effects, children, pregnant women, and people with compromised immune systems may be more susceptible to its toxic effects. In these individuals, even small amounts of solanine can cause serious health problems.

Symptoms of solanine poisoning typically appear within a few hours to a few days after eating the contaminated potato. They may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach cramps, headache, dizziness, and fever. In severe cases, solanine poisoning can cause respiratory failure, seizures, and even death.

Another risk associated with eating sprouted potatoes is the potential for bacterial contamination. Bacteria such as E. coli and Salmonella can be present on the surface of the potato, especially if it has been stored in warm and humid conditions. If the sprouted potato is not cooked properly, these bacteria can cause food poisoning.

Benefits of eating sprouted potatoes:

While there are certainly risks associated with eating sprouted potatoes, some experts argue that they also offer some health benefits. Sprouted potatoes contain higher levels of certain nutrients than non-sprouted potatoes. For example, they are a good source of vitamin C, potassium, and antioxidants.

Sprouted potatoes also contain elevated levels of enzymes that help to break down complex carbohydrates into simpler sugars, making them easier to digest. This can be especially beneficial for people with digestive issues, such as irritable bowel syndrome.

How to store potatoes to prevent sprouting

Before we dive into the safety of sprouted potatoes, let’s first talk about how to store potatoes to prevent sprouting in the first place. Potatoes naturally contain a hormone called auxin, which triggers sprouting when the conditions are right. To prevent sprouting, it’s important to store potatoes in a cool, dark, and dry place. Ideally, the temperature should be between 45 and 50 degrees Fahrenheit, and the humidity should be around 95 percent. Here are some tips to help you store potatoes properly:

  • Keep potatoes in a well-ventilated container. A cardboard box or a mesh bag are both good options.
  • Avoid storing potatoes near onions, as onions release a gas that can cause potatoes to sprout faster.
  • Do not store potatoes in the refrigerator, as the low temperature can cause the starch in the potato to convert to sugar, resulting in a gritty texture when cooked.
  • Check your potatoes regularly and remove any that show signs of sprouting or decay.

By following these guidelines, you can extend the shelf life of your potatoes and prevent them from sprouting prematurely.

Sprouted potatoes may not be safe for consumption due to the presence of toxic compounds called solanine and chaconine. These compounds can cause a range of symptoms, from gastrointestinal distress to neurological effects, and can be particularly harmful to vulnerable populations such as children, pregnant women, and individuals with compromised immune systems.

However, if the sprouts are removed and any green areas or bruises are cut away, the potatoes can be safe to eat. It is also important to store potatoes in a cool, dark, and dry place to prevent sprouting in the first place. While sprouted potatoes may be tempting to salvage, it is best to err on the side of caution and opt for fresh, non-sprouted potatoes whenever possible.
