Train journeys and food have a unique connection in India. Traveling on a train across the country exposes one to an incredible variety of local cuisines that are as diverse as the country itself. With each new station, a plethora of regional specialties are brought to light, each offering an opportunity to indulge in a new culinary adventure.

The humble cup of tea is a constant companion to most train journeys in India. It is a beverage that not only provides a welcome respite from the often hot and humid conditions but is also the perfect accompaniment to the array of snacks and dishes that are available at railway stations and on board trains. Some of the popular snacks that are widely available on trains include samosas, vada pavs, cutlets, and sandwiches.

In recent times, there has been a growing trend towards offering a more immersive dining experience to train passengers. One such initiative is the Western Railway’s restaurant-on-wheels, which is set to be launched at the Andheri and Borivali stations in Mumbai. This unique concept involves converting an old railway coach and placing it on rails, creating a restaurant that provides the experience of dining inside a train.

The restaurant-on-wheels will offer a range of delicacies, with the menu being decided by the licensee. Diners will be able to enjoy a variety of continental, pan-Indian, and other cuisines in a setting that is unlike any other. The interior of the restaurant will be designed around a theme that enhances the overall dining experience, making it a memorable experience for all who partake.

Ministry of Railways tweeted, “Meals on wheels. With the commencement of a Rail Coach restaurant in a refurbished, non-functional coach at Jogbani Station in Bihar, passengers and the general public can now relish delectable cuisines.”

The restaurant-on-wheels is expected to accommodate 40 diners at a time, providing an intimate and exclusive dining experience. Such a novel concept is sure to be a hit with train passengers, especially those who are looking for something more than the usual snacks and meals offered on trains.

In addition to the restaurant-on-wheels, a rail coach restaurant was launched at the Jogbani station in Bihar. This unique restaurant is housed in a non-functional coach and provides a dining experience that is sure to delight passengers who are looking for something different.
