Ferrero expands snack portfolio with acquisition of German snack-bar manufacturing facility

Published:

Ferrero, the major player in the confectionery industry, has struck a deal with Laurens Spethmann Holding (LSH) to purchase a snack-bar manufacturing facility situated in Germany.

In Faulbach, Bavaria, the Medin facility manufactures an assortment of health food products such as muesli and cereal bars, fruit bars, sweetener tablets, and liquid sweeteners for the Nutrisun brand.

The financial details were not revealed.

In a brief statement, Ferrero said, “This acquisition supports the Ferrero Group’s growth strategy in the so-called ‘better-for-you’ snacks category, where it continues to expand its presence and product offering.”

Additionally, Ferrero announced its intention to retain all of the plant’s current staff members.

Lars Wagener, CEO of LSH commented, “In Ferrero, we have found a buyer for the Medin plant who offers the employees promising prospects for the future.”

LSH confirmed that the execution phase will commence in the coming weeks and is predicted to conclude by July. The German enterprise will continue to operate in the bar and snack sector through its subsidiary, Schock.

Ferrero’s purchase of Irish protein bar manufacturer Fulfil Nutrition occurred just one year prior to the current agreement to acquire the snack-bar manufacturing plant from Laurens Spethmann Holding (LSH).

To expand its snack offerings, Ferrero, the company behind famous brands such as Nutella and Ferrero Rocher, has been making several acquisitions in recent years.

Earlier this year, in February, Ferrero acquired Fresystem, an Italian frozen pastry company.

In December of last year, the privately held Ferrero made a significant expansion in the United States through the acquisition of Wells Enterprises, a prominent American ice-cream producer. Additionally, four years ago, Ferrero obtained a controlling interest in Ice Cream Factory Comaker (ICFC), a Spain-based ice-cream manufacturer, for an undisclosed amount.

Ferrero faced criticism in Europe last year when a salmonella outbreak occurred at one of its plants in Belgium, leading to the recall of Kinder products. However, in September, Ferrero received full authorization to resume production at the Arlon facility.
