Chicken Shawarma Salad: A healthy way to enjoy Shawarma without the guilt

Chicken shawarma is a Middle Eastern dish that is known for its juicy, flavorful meat that is traditionally served in a wrap or pita. However, if you’re looking for a healthier and lighter option, try a Chicken Shawarma Salad. This salad combines all the delicious flavors of shawarma with fresh vegetables and a tangy dressing. 

This salad is packed with proteins and low in calories and also is a rich source of vitamins and minerals like vitamin B6, iron, and zinc, which are important for maintaining good health. It is also high in fiber which helps in digestion.

Here’s how you can make it at home:

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound boneless, skinless chicken breast, cut into strips
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon cumin powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon coriander powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 4 cups mixed greens
  • 1 cucumber, sliced
  • 1 red onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 tomato, diced
  • 1/2 cup chopped parsley
  • 1/2 cup chopped mint
  • 1/4 cup chopped cilantro

For the dressing:

  • 1/4 cup plain yogurt
  • 1/4 cup tahini
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • Salt to taste

Instructions:

  1. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the olive oil, cumin powder, paprika, coriander powder, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper.
  2. Add the chicken strips to the marinade and mix well to coat. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes or up to 2 hours.
  3. Preheat the oven to 425°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and arrange the marinated chicken strips in a single layer.
  4. Bake the chicken for 15-20 minutes or until cooked through and golden brown.
  5. While the chicken is baking, prepare the salad by mixing together the mixed greens, cucumber, red onion, tomato, parsley, mint, and cilantro in a large bowl.
  6. In a separate bowl, whisk together the yogurt, tahini, lemon juice, minced garlic, and salt until smooth.
  7. Once the chicken is done, remove it from the oven and let it cool for a few minutes.
  8. Add the chicken to the salad and toss well.
  9. Drizzle the yogurt-tahini dressing over the salad and serve immediately.
