Breakfast meals from the NorthEastern Indian Cuisine – Light, Delicious and Beyond Momos

Published:

The North-East of India is a fascinating mix of people and civilizations. Their flavours and meals are as distinct as their colourful way of life. Many of their meals make use of simple yet flavorful fresh ingredients such as Bamboo Shoot, Bhut Jolokia, and regional greens. Despite the fact that many recipes contain meat, it is fascinating to note how light and delicious these are.

Northeast India is a foodie’s heaven. Momo is the first thing that springs to mind when we think of northeastern food. However, northeast is much more than just momos. In reality, there are alternative foods that taste far better. The majority of Northeast specialties are not vegetarian.

For all the foodies out there we have created a list of foods that you can enjoy as breakfast and the taste is truly and amazingly divine.

  • Rice and bai, Mizoram

Mizo cuisine is modest, thus a simple breakfast from this region should not surprise you. Rice with bai, a mixed vegetable stew stewed with green chilies, fermented pork, and a pinch of baking soda, is their breakfast. Bai is typically made with cabbage, brinjal, mustard leaf, and potatoes, with no salt or spices.

  • Smoked pork, Nagaland

Mornings in Nagaland begin early with a meal that often consists of a variety of brown, red, or black rice eaten with a meat dish or veggies. Not to mention that each tribe from each state, a total of 16, has its own variety of breakfast. The Sema tribe, for example, eats dry pork cooked with either akhuni (fermented chutney made of soybeans) or yam leaves with steamed vegetables, whilst the Aao tribe eats pork with anishi, which is fermented yam leaves, for breakfast.

  • Khar, Assam

Assamese people are defined by their Khar dish. Every Assamese likes this food. Khar means ashes, and the major component in the dish is banana ash, which is filtered in water and used sparingly. Raw papaya and pulses are the other components. All of these ingredients are simmered in water until the papaya is tender. The flavour of the meal is invigorating to the senses. Finally, the meal is topped with mustard oil and served hot. It is typically served with sticky or plain rice and is extremely beneficial to the body.

Next time you visit any of these places don’t forget to try out the authentic food for utmost pleasure and satisfaction, we are sure your journey will become more happening after trying out the best cuisine and the wholesome flavors of north east.
