In preparation for their future son-in-law during last year’s Makar Sankranti celebration, a family from Narsapuram in the disorganized West Godavari area fed him 365 different dishes. During festivals, Indian households are known for spoiling or treating their son-in-law.
Even though they have been carrying out the same custom for years, Andhra households have only recently begun to treat their son-in-law by providing a lavish feast at the Sankranti (Pedda Panduga) holiday. In both Telugu states, food prepared in Godavari districts is regarded as the best.
Buddha Muralidhar, a son-in-law from Anakapalli, a town close to Visakhapatnam, wanted to marry into a Godavari district household. The Architect never imagined he would marry one of these regions’ daughters.
Unexpectedly, he received a match from Eluru Town, and on April 16 of last year’s destination wedding at Araku, he married Koruballi Kusuma. The parents of MBA graduate Kusuma started planning a lavish feast for their son-in-law last week and have been working on it all week. The number of items they prepared—379—was the largest in prior years.
“We intended to provide him with a wide range of food items. My parents created a menu for the previous ten days”, said the daughter and bride-to-be. Businessman Bhima Rao’s son-in-law expressed amazement at the news. “I tried everything.” It has a distinctive feeling.
According to Muralidhar, the culture of the Konaseema and Godavari districts is significantly dissimilar from that in the Vizag region.
The 28-year-old Muralidhar added that none of the 22 cousins in his extended family had married a woman from the Godavari area. He was the first to have the opportunity and honor of having such in-laws.
