Avarebele Mela has returned: Why is there a food festival in Bengaluru?

Published:

Many foodies, including food bloggers, are anticipated to attend this winter culinary festival at the National College grounds in Basavangudi.

This year’s Avarebele Mela, a well-known food festival in Bengaluru, is returning, and the event’s organizers have announced that it will take place from January 5 to 9. Many foodies, including food bloggers, are anticipated to attend this winter culinary festival at the National College grounds in Basavangudi.

The Avarebele Mela is what?

Hyacinth beans are commonly grown in Karnataka throughout the winter under the Kannada name Avarekai. The seasonal bean is a critical ingredient in many popular south Indian dishes, including idlis, vadas, uthappams, bisi bele bath, rasam, and many others.

The management of VV Puram’s Shree Vasavi Condiments began the Avarebele Mela in 2000, taking inspiration from south Bengaluru’s famed Kadlekai Parish. This year, there are anticipated to be over 100 dishes on the menu for this themed culinary festival, all of which are based on the Avarekai. This seasonal vegetable will be used in dishes from China, including Chow Mein and even fried rice, in addition to south Indian cuisine served at the food festival.

The list’s most well-known goods are snacks like Avarebele Chikki and Avarebele Halwa. Without using any middlemen, the farmers provide the beans for the Avarebele Mela.

As a memorial to the late Kannada actor Puneeth Rajkumar, the organizers this year are also offering a special treat named “Appu Special.”
